GreenMarket Strawberry Festival Brings Sweetness to West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – As a special treat during the month of love, the West Palm Beach GreenMarket Strawberry Festival promises a sweet surprise for lovers of the heart-shaped, in-season berry. The 17th annual Strawberry Festival will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include freshly made strawberry shortcakes by Chef Carlino of Cider Doughnuts. All proceeds from the featured shortcakes, a $5 donation, will benefit Hospice of Palm Beach County.

“The Strawberry Festival brings together thousands of visitors and local residents to enjoy strawberry goodies while giving back to the community,” said Mary Pinak, Community Events Manager for the City of West Palm Beach Department of Parks and Recreation. “Thanks to everyone’s contributions, last year we raised more than $1,500 for Hospice of Palm Beach County.”

Guests will have the opportunity to get “Freshly Dressed,” too, by stopping by the “Strawberry Selfie Station,” where guests can take photos making it look like they are wearing strawberries. The inspiration for the popup photo props came from the Instagram of a mother in Turkey, who made the idea popular over the summer. The idea also helped to set the stage for the GreenMarket’s 2017 – 2018 marketing campaign, “Freshly Dressed.”

Guests are also encouraged to shop from more than 90 local vendors selling a variety of products, including fresh produce, exotic plants and flowers, herbs and spices, baked goods, gourmet and specialty foods, coffee and teas, and much more. In addition, the GreenMarket also features live music, unlimited mimosas for $10, free activities for kids, plus plentiful green space and seating for a morning of fun and relaxation.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket is produced by the City of West Palm Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, Community Events, and will run weekly through Saturday, April 21, 2018, except for Saturday, March 24, 2018, due to the Palm Beach International Boat Show. The GreenMarket is friendly to dogs on short leashes and always free. Parking is free in two of the City’s closest garages, on the corners of Banyan/Olive and Evernia/Olive, during market hours. Those interested in arriving by boat can also take advantage of the City’s free public docks.

The mission of the West Palm Beach GreenMarket is to provide the community with seasonal access to locally grown fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, plants and agricultural products. The market supports the southeast Florida agricultural community and stimulates agricultural development, particularly in Palm Beach County, by providing an outlet for locally grown crops and specialty products.

Local Health Center Earns Recognition for Work to Reduce Heart Attacks & Strokes

FoundCare, Inc. Earns National Recognition
For Efforts Aimed at Reducing Heart Attacks and Strokes

Health Center Among Nationwide Effort to Prioritize Blood Pressure Wellness and Keep Community Healthy

(West Palm Beach, Fla.) – FoundCare, Inc. is among a group of 310 first-time recipients of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Medical Association’s Target: BP Recognition Program awards. The AHA and AMA recently announced the names of the physician practices and health systems nationwide being recognized for their commitment to reducing the number of Americans who have heart attacks and strokes each year.

Launched in 2017, the Target: BP Recognition Program is an extension of Target: BP™—a national initiative between the AHA and AMA aimed at addressing the growing burden of high blood pressure in the U.S. FoundCare is among the more than 1,100 physician practices and health systems nationwide that have joined Target: BP™, sharing a common goal to reduce the number of adult patients with uncontrolled blood pressure and improve health outcomes associated with heart disease.

Of the 103 million Americans with high blood pressure, only about half of them have it controlled to a healthy level despite the fact that high blood pressure can often be managed effectively when patients work with their physician to create and follow a treatment plan. No single risk factor has more impact on the nation’s death rates from cardiovascular disease than blood pressure.

“High blood pressure is often a major factor among patients afflicted with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke, and frequently impacts their mortality,” said Dr. Oneka Marriott, FoundCare’s Chief Medical Officer. “Participating in the Target: BP program has provided access to a number of resources for FoundCare’s clinicians and patients to help lower blood pressure and prevent disease.”

To help physician practices and health systems achieve their goals, Target: BP™ provides all participants with a dedicated website featuring a free evidence-based improvement program that includes tools and resources to help clinicians improve blood pressure control rates. To facilitate easy and seamless adoption of the Target: BP™ Improvement Program, registrants have access to trained support specialists within their community who can help identify specific program components to incorporate into clinical practice.

“While high blood pressure is an easy condition to treat in that we have the tools to do so, there are many variables and barriers to success for many patients,” said AMA President David O. Barbe, M.D. “The AHA and AMA developed and piloted the Target: BP program to help bring patients and health care providers together to successfully get blood pressure under control, and help patients keep it controlled. We applaud the providers who are already working hard to control their patients’ blood pressure, and we will continue to urge more physician practices, health systems and patients to join this effort to prioritize blood pressure control and increase the national control of blood pressure. Together, we can save many more lives and improve health outcomes nationwide.”

“We’re excited to bring Target: BP to physicians as a tool to help reduce the devastating impact of high blood pressure in terms of heart disease and stroke, and we’re proud to recognize practices that are joining us to increase focus on blood pressure control,” said AHA President John Warner, M.D. FoundCare, Inc., along with all other practices being recognized, was honored late last year during the AHA’s annual Scientific Sessions conference, and will also be featured in upcoming Target: BP materials. This includes appearing in print ads, on TargetBP.org, and the Target: BP Wall of Recognition that will be displayed at AMA and AHA events throughout the year.

FoundCare, Inc. is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center that offers pediatric and adult primary care, chronic disease management, behavioral health services, dentistry, laboratory services and X-rays, all in one location. FoundCare accepts most insurance plans, Medicaid, Medicare and self-pay on a sliding fee scale that is based on family size and income. Telecom Pioneer and Wife Give $5 Million for Cardiac Surgery Program

Telecom Pioneer and Wife Give $5 Million for Cardiac Surgery Program

JUPITER, Florida – Jupiter Medical Center Foundation announced a $5 million gift from retired Sprint Nextel executive Tim Donahue and his wife, Jayne Donahue, to support the hospital’s ambitious $300 million “Vision. Innovation. Impact.” campaign. The Donahue’s generous pledge will support Jupiter Medical Center’s aggressive move toward open heart surgery by Fall 2018.  Their gift will be recognized as the Timothy and Jayne Donahue Cardiac Surgery Program at Jupiter Medical Center.

Jupiter Medical Center – currently a Center of Excellence in cardiac care – has invested heavily in expanding its interventional cardiac capabilities over the past three years. Since 2015, the hospital has forged an innovative clinical partnership with Mount Sinai Heart New York and added two interventional cardiac catheterization labs for procedures such as balloon angioplasty and coronary stents, increasing by 300 percent the number of coronary interventions Jupiter Medical Center performs. By April 2017 the hospital had achieved the 1,100 procedural volumes required for open heart attestation by the State of Florida. The next critical step is becoming a Level II Cardiac Surgery Program.

“Since our arrival in Palm Beach County, Jayne and I have been impressed with Jupiter Medical Center’s phenomenal growth and outstanding services. The fact that Jupiter Medical Center is a not-for-profit hospital dedicated to serving the community has always appealed to us. To us, the new Cardiac Surgery Program is yet another step in the continuation of providing those with cardiac issues state-of-the-art care in a patient-first environment that is the hallmark of Jupiter Medical Center,” said Tim Donahue.

This generous gift from the Donahues jump-starts a $10 million fundraising goal for the Cardiac Surgery Program, which will allow the hospital to deliver the most advanced cardiac procedures for patients with heart and vascular disease just minutes from their doorsteps. Already recognized among the top 10 percent in the U.S. for medical excellence in cardiac care, Jupiter Medical Center will soon be able to perform more advanced cardiac procedures, including cardiac bypass, valve replacement and repairs, as well as advanced interventional procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, advanced ablations for atrial fibrillation and open heart surgery.

New operating rooms, technology, labs, and more will make the Cardiac Surgery Program “open-heart ready.” “Our goal is to improve the high level of cardiac care we already offer at Jupiter Medical Center,” said Dr. Gonzalo J. Loveday, medical director, Mount Sinai Heart New York at Jupiter Medical Center. “It’s crucial to have top-quality cardiac care minutes from home when seconds really count.”

Jupiter Medical Center’s affiliation with Mount Sinai New York encompasses all areas of cardiac care: wellness and preventive cardiology, non-invasive diagnostics, interventional cardiology, congestive heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, electrophysiology, research and education, and the seamless continuity of care.

“Jupiter Medical Center is focused on building a world-class cardiac program with the best physicians, surgeons, and technology,” said Liv Vesely, president of the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of the Donahues, we are thrilled to be able to invest even more in developing a robust cardiovascular program that includes open heart surgery.”

Known for their support of many philanthropic causes, the Donahues have given to a number of other non-profit organizations and charities. Most recently they were recognized in 2017 for their ongoing support of Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches. Tim Donahue serves on the Boards of Directors for NVR Inc. He also sits on the boards of UCT Coatings Inc., where he is chair, Ligado Networks and Radius Networks. Prior board service includes ADT Corporation, John Carroll University, Tyco International Ltd., Covidien Ltd. and the Eastman Kodak Company. He was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.

The Mastery of Planning

By Sherri Mraz

Starting a new year is always so promising. Most of us set up a new calendar and have high hopes for our goals. Unfortunately, usually by February people start losing speed. You may even be noticing it already.

I noticed that for me my best days are the ones that are planned out. My weeks are way more productive when I have my calendar mapped out with critical appointments, classes and activities.

I hear a lot of mentors advising to list everything on your calendar as an appointment – I am the opposite. I try to keep my calendar really light as things always come up or someone needs to change their appointment. Plus, for most of my projects there is a lot of prep work that goes into it so I know it can get hairy. I always allow more time than I think it will actually take.

What does my calendar look like?…

For me, and what I advise, it to keep Monday mornings as office time to get organized for the week, confirm appointments, and send out my newsletter/blog, etc.

I stick with the BIG ROCK theory and treat important business building blocks with prime real estate blocks.

Clients are blocked together. Training classes, webinars and cooking classes are non-changeable appointments. I only place non-changeable appointments into time slots. The other projects are floating and can be moved around and don’t require any fixed time slot.

Friday is always blocked out for Follow-up and Finances.

The amazing thing to me is that people who look super organized still feel like they don’t have enough time. We live in a world of chaos and noise. Our minds are always trying to fog things out. The problem is with the overload you may occasionally fog out the wrong information and then miss something that was actually important to you.

Mindfulness is key. Paying attention to the little choices we are faced with all day long. For the most part we aren’t even aware of how much each tiny choice affects us.

You need to plan. Now I’m not saying that everything you plan will work out. The saying is, “People plan and God laughs.”

By planning and actually using your calendar you will have a greater chance to accomplish what you need and want.

For me, I wake up early and conquer a big rock that usually includes writing. I want to do this while my mind is fairly clear. I grab a bite to eat and then I exercise.  I like to get my work done and then use working out as my reward.

Everyone is different and I KNOW that most people do better if they workout first thing, but the important thing is that I do it, and that you do it too.

My Nana always used to say,

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness.”

For me, I know I feel better when things are in order. As soon as the house gets messy, my calendar falls apart or I don’t do what I set out to do. I feel yucky.

Whether designing a business or keeping good health, it is the same. You need to see the end result, then work it backwards, keep it as simple and clutter free as possible and stay the course.

But all things should be done decently and in order
