League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County Invites the Public to FREE Panel Discussion at the Palm Beach Post Auditorium in West Palm Beach
Saturday, August 12 – 9 to 11 am

Expert Speakers Include Palm Beach Post Editorial Writer Howard Goodman; Joyce Reingold, Former Publisher of the Palm Beach Daily News; Brett Sandala, Founder of Ocean Drive Social; and Brian Williams, Former Managing Editor of the National Enquirer

(West Palm Beach, FL – July 20, 2017) For its fourth major “issues” event this summer, the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County is inviting the public to a FREE panel discussion on another serious and oh-so-timely subject:

FAKE NEWS
(Alternative Facts or Just Not True)
August 12 in West Palm Beach

This important and informative panel discussion will be held from 9 to 11 am at the Palm Beach Post Auditorium, 2751 S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach (the southwest corner of Dixie and Belvedere Road). Atlantis. While there is no cost to attend this event, interested people are encouraged to register in advance online at www.lwvpbc.org.

The expert speakers at this upcoming event include:
+ Howard Goodman, Editorial Writer at The Palm Beach Post
Quote: “Here is a paraphrase from a book by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosensteil, but I believe it: ‘The essence of journalism is a discipline of verification. Anything else is just entertainment, propaganda, fiction or art.’”

+ Panel Moderator Joyce Reingold, Former Publisher of the Palm Beach Daily News
Quote: “I’m looking forward to exploring this urgent issue with our panel of news professionals. So called ‘fake news’ – misinformation, disinformation – is nothing new, but its potential for harm today is unprecedented, as we’re witnessing on an almost daily basis.”

+ Brett Sandala, Founder of Ocean Drive Social, a modern brand consulting firm specializing in social media marketing and online branding
Quote: “The infamous fake news of our last election cycle was not a new phenomenon, but a perfect storm of hyper-partisan politics, social media, and our modern online news culture. Prominent news outlets have edged into tabloidism for years in search of wider audiences and viral content – largely setting the stage for the purveyors of fake news.”

+ Brian Williams, former Managing Editor of the National Enquirer
Quote: “As a former editor of the National Enquirer, I can’t tell you the joy I feel when the New York Times and the Washington Post and network news are all accused of reporting ‘fake news’. What’s next, alien sightings?”

This special presentation by the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County is underwritten by Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey & Fronrath.

About the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County:

Happy July and August, 2017!

Happy July and August, 2017!

Getting ready to teach.

It’s that time of year when things start to slow down Around Wellington.  The heat index is a killer right about now, and yesterday it was at 107 degrees.  The equestrian events are not in season, and the kids are home for the summer.  If you’re going to do something outside, it better involve water, or else you might keel over from the heat.

As for me, things are not slowing down.  I’ve decided to make a major career change from being a corporate copywriter to being a middle school Language Arts teacher.  So I’m making trips to the dollar store to find decorations for the classroom and brushing up on books like Treasure Island, Peter Pan and Black Beauty.

Am I crazy to throw myself into a den of 6th and 7th graders?  Quite possibly.  Hormones will be raging.  Bullying might happen.  But at the same time, I wanted to put my heart into what I do.  It’s important to make a difference.  So instead of making tiny changes to the copy on office essentials for print catalogs that no one under 70 years of age will probably read (Hello, there’s the Internet), I’ve decided to share my enthusiasm for writing with kids.  And I must admit, I’m getting excited just in the planning stages.

So what will happen with AroundWellington.com a few of you have asked.  It will keep on keeping on.  THANKS to a tremendously talented staff, including volunteers, I can still manage Around Wellington.  It’s been going strong for 11 years and continues to grow.

For July, we were happy to bring you the story of Eagle Arts Academy and their unique approach to education, infusing arts and technology into learning.  For August, we will have a story about what’s new at the Palm Beach Zoo.  There are a lot of new developments going on there, and it’s literally a “cool” place to be in the summer.

As usual, please check out our many stories brought to you by our AroundWellington team of writers.  THANKS as always to Carol Porter for some great photos of local events – see “Photo Galleries.”  And coming soon, we will have another special video, produced by Monica Kallas of SharpShooter Marketing Group.

Thanks for your support and participation.  And see you Around Wellington!

Sincerely,

Kravis Center Announces New ‘Dream Awards’ for High School Musical Theater

KRAVIS CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

‘Dream Awards’ Will Send Two Students to New York City to Compete in the National ‘Jimmy Awards’

(West Palm Beach, FL) – The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is excited to announce its newest arts education program, the Kravis Center Dream Awards: Celebrating High School Musical Theater Excellence.

This new performing arts education initiative for high school students, being launched for the 2017-2018 school year and sponsored by PNC’s Arts Alive program, will be open to all public and private high school students in Palm Beach County. During the yearlong program, which begins in September, Kravis Center theater adjudicators will view and critique eligible musical theater productions at participating schools.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, student ensemble work and individual students’ accomplishments in musical theater performance will be recognized and honored at an exciting awards event in the 2,195-seat Dreyfoos Hall at the Kravis Center.

“We have always wanted to create a high school musical theater awards program here at the Kravis Center, so we’re thrilled that our Dream Awards are launching this season,” said Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO. “Our community has become the cultural capital of Florida, and these awards are a testament to the mission of the Kravis Center, as well as to the hard work by our local educators to make arts education a priority for our young people.”

At the Dream Awards event, two local student actors – one male and one female – will be selected from among the eligible performers to travel to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, and represent Palm Beach County while taking part in a weeklong musical theater intensive. The culmination of the intensive will be the Jimmy Awards ceremony performance on the Minskoff Theatre stage on Broadway. All expenses for this student experience will be compliments of the Kravis Center.

During the awards event at the Kravis Center, an inspiring local theater educator and his/her commitment to performing arts education will also be honored.

“We know what art can do, how it changes perspectives, even changes lives,” said Cressman Bronson, PNC regional president for Florida East. “From classical music and fine art to dance and theater, we’re committed to keeping the arts alive in Florida.”

Bronson added that the arts and culture industry in the state of Florida generates approximately $49.7 billion in annual revenues, according to the Division of Cultural Affairs.

The Dream Awards pilot program has three primary objectives:
To provide much-needed enrichment and access for students and drama teachers to learn from theater professionals. By launching this program, the Kravis Center expands the resources available to underserved students and under-funded theater arts programs throughout Palm Beach County schools.
To celebrate the art form of musical theater and to elevate the prominence of our schools’ musical theater programs, helping make our community aware of the fine work that is being produced in our local high schools.
To engage the community and offer performance excellence at an affordable ticket price. This project welcomes family members, students and community members to experience the outstanding work of these young performers while contributing to the development of future audiences for live performing arts in southeast Florida.
Starting in September, Kravis Center theater adjudicators will attend eligible musical performances at each participating school and prepare written evaluations of student performances. The written feedback will then be provided to both the students and directors to enhance the growth of each individual program.

Selected student actors, individually and in ensembles, will be invited to join the cast for the end-of-year awards production. In the spring, these groups will work with a guest stage director, a guest choreographer and a guest musical director to workshop the awards production, which will take place in Dreyfoos Hall on Sunday June 3, 2018 at 7 pm. A group of honorary judges will attend the awards celebration and will select the actor and actress who will go on to the Jimmy Awards ceremony in New York City.

Educators interested in having their theater programs participate in the 2017-2018 Dream Awards are encouraged to contact Miranda Hawkins at the Kravis Center at hawkins@kravis.org or by calling 561-651-4251. Applications to participate are due by September 15th, 2017.

“Mug Shots”

Faces Faces Faces Faces Faces

Portraits Portraits Portraits Portraits Portraits Portraits

Opening Friday, August 4   6-10PM

Free Admission   Free Parking

15 South J Street in Downtown Lake Worth

“Mug Shots”  is all about faces and portraits.  Portraits are the favorite subjects of most artists, often because they need only look in the mirror for a model.  The portraits in this show are serious, whimsical, off-beat and abstract visions of humanity (and the world of beasts.) A few artists special in animal portraits.  The audience for the show is invited to seek out their favorite artists  and ask to have a portrait created of them, their families, their grandchildren or their pets.

As a special treat in the gallery, artist, Alyrical,  will be on hand to paint or draw  a “Mug Shot on the Spot.”  For only $20 paid to an artist who usually charges hundreds of dollars for their works, visitors can walk away with a special work of art.  For a more intricate work of art, Alyrical will photograph you and create a masterpiece.  Ask any artist in the show to do this, as well, and you will be sure to be captured on canvas for posterity.

For several weeks a group of teen-age artists from the Lake Worth and as far away as the Acreage, area have been working on a large mosaic project.  They took time to create a series of masks for this show.  Some of them will be for sale, the proceeds going to a college scholarship fund for these young people.

Included in the show will be paintings, photographs, glass works, fountains, wooden and pottery masks.

The gallery will celebrate this exhibit with a wine and cheese reception.  The wines provided are donated French wines from a local wine distributor.

“Exercise and Managing Joint Pain”

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – Join The Gardens Mall Walking Club on Tuesday, August 15, and meet Judy Dellosa, a registered nurse and Orthopedic & Spine Patient Navigator at Jupiter Medical Center, who will discuss lifestyle tips and exercise techniques to help improve one’s overall joint health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 15 million U.S. adults live with moderate to severe joint pain related to arthritis. Severe joint pain limits a person’s ability to do basic tasks and can affect their quality of life. Learning self-management skills, maintaining a healthy diet, and being active can help manage joint pain.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Nordstrom Court. Light bites will be served. Discussion with Judy Dellosa starts at 9 a.m. Stretching and cardio intensive mall walking will follow at 9:30 a.m.

The number of calories burned when walking depends on the intensity of the walk, as well as the person’s weight. According to Harvard Health Publications, a 125-pound person will burn about 120 calories walking 1.5 miles, while a 185-pound person will burn about 170 calories.

New members will receive a complimentary Mall Walker Fit Kit from Jupiter Medical Center, which includes a tote bag, water bottle, pedometer, and T-shirt. Membership also includes special offers from participating mall retailers, and invitations to health and wellness screenings, events, and lectures. Emotion “Trump”(s) Logic and Reason

By Bryan Hayes

Evoking an emotional response is the basis for headlines, plots and story lines.   Logic and reason do not equate to increased sales, more votes, or better ratings.  On the contrary, the more emotionally captivated the audience the less a need for logic and reason.

Today, emotions are running high about sustainability. Is climate change real, or not?  Are scientific reports fake, or not?

In an age where fear is a catalyst, it can be difficult ascertaining fact from fiction.   The headlines may read one thing but the story may be something different.   Plus, the sponsor of said story might be influencing the agenda they are promoting.

If one only looks only at the total body of work that is the news media, one might ascertain that every category of violence and crime has increased dramatically.   Even if that is categorically false, and can be proven false, we see a never ending visual barrage of rape, ravage and pillage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Logic and reason, while not necessarily the catalyst for change or the popular framework whereby information is distributed, is an integral part of choice.   Fear is a trendy emotional trigger. It is everywhere.  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

It was not that long ago, though, when the newspaper and the 5:00 a clock news were main sources of information.   The newspaper was delivered daily, and sometimes weekly.  The news segments lasted a mere hour (coupled with late night news and the morning news).  That is a stark contrast to today’s world. Are there more news worthy events?  Or, are there more time slots to fill? Is that why less than news worthy material ends up making the headlines?

Has life really changed that much, or rather has the coverage of life changed?

Looking back, life is much clearer.   Part of that is disassociating from the emotion of the moment.  Getting caught up in the emotion is also a part of living.

When emotions run high, logic and reason can be thrown out the window.   Political debates are a prime example.  The content of the message matters less. What’s important is the sound bite.  Providing a plan of action is not as pivotal as saying what someone wants to hear.

With such an atmosphere of fear there is inherently a lot of distrust of everything.   What gets lost is some very good, responsible reporting.   But, there are reputable sources that disseminate information responsibly.

Stepping away from it – all of it – can be refreshing.   Pushing the reset button can be instrumental in changing the reaction to current events.   Taking away the emotion can bring a new clarity to the equation.
