Does your Career Affect Your Health?

By Sherri Mraz

Have you considered how your career affects your overall health? Did you know your career is another component of the body, mind, and spirit connection?

Think about it: you spend 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week at work. Chances are you spend more time with your coworkers than anyone else in your life. Many of us wear stress as a badge of honor, convinced that productivity requires endless turmoil.

Even if you work for yourself as an entrepreneur you still must take time to honor yourself. Working for yourself does not naturally go hand in hand with good self-care.

As Lori Greiner said, “Entrepreneurs are the only people who work 80 hour weeks to avoid working 40 hour weeks.”

A harmonious and supportive healthy work-life balance is achievable.

Visualizing what’s important and rewarding yourself are great ways to maximize productivity when deadlines are tight and your workload is heavy.

To brighten your space:

  • Bring a picture of a loved one or your child’s artwork to keep on your desk at work.
  • Brighten your space with fresh flowers.
  • Stock your desk with luxurious teas as a treat.
  • Take five minutes each day to de-clutter your space – a clear desk promotes a clear mind.
  • Add spa-like touches, add your favorite color, and maybe an essential oil
  • Try a mid-day stretching exercise to aid circulation and promote relaxation.

Although the modern work world is challenging, it is filled with opportunities. Doing work you love is essential to creating a healthy, balanced life.

According to the title of the book, ”Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow: Discovering Your Right Livelihood,” by Marsha Sinetar, says it best. You must have a feeling of worth from what you do.

There is never a day that I don’t love my work. Sometimes the world of technology makes it more challenging when there are long hours on the computer, but when I ask myself what I would do if given a new opportunity, I would always choose what I am doing.

If you need a career change and want to do the work that you love and join me in my mission to build a brigade of healthy cooking instructors and health coaches. www.wellnesscookingacademy.com

Get Your Glass in Shape

Eric Baumel studies glass artistry.                                                 Photo: Lori Baumel

By Lori Hope Baumel

“Benzaiten is the goddess of everything that flows: water, time, words, speech, eloquence, music and by extension, knowledge.” – Wikipedia

I have a well-kept secret and I’m going to share it with you. My husband and I have discovered a place that’s an outlet for creativity, watching artists at work and an opportunity to have an inexpensive night or afternoon out with or without the kids.

In the past few months, the Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts has been a joyous discovery. We’ve attended a glass-blowing class, enjoyed their art gallery and have observed demonstrations by world-renowned glass artisans. Once a month they’ve hosted evening events complete with live music. The art space has a protected viewing area with bench seating for visitors and demonstrations.

Unfortunately, the season for evening events is over. But, plan ahead, the nighttime festivities will begin again in the fall. I will keep you posted when the live music activities return. In the meantime, you can take a glass blowing class or visit their gallery all year round.

Located in the historic Florida East Coast Train Depot in downtown Lake Worth (in the Lake Worth Arts District), this 14,500 square foot arts center is dedicated to working artists and the community at large. It has immersed the public in arts production and provides interaction with artists from around the globe. Benzaiten sponsors new works of art, encourages collaboration between peers and provides instruction from masters to emerging artists.

The center boasts a glassblowing hot shop with three glory holes (a space for reheating glass to soften it), two furnaces, multiple annealers and a large cold-working room. The “flame working and fusing” studio is a 750 square foot air-conditioned space with multiple stations containing a variety of torches and multiple kilns. Personally, I look forward to taking some jewelry making classes in there all year round.

The elegant 2,000 square foot gallery and gift shop showcases rotating visiting artist exhibitions. Best of all, they’re expanding. In 2019, they’re adding a working sculpture garden with a covered viewing area where people can observe art works made in real time.

So there you have it. You now know my secret and have my permission to spread the word. As they say on their website: at Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts, “You too can become an artisan.”

The program is offered in Spanish (on request in advance) as well as English, and has a $1 materials fee per child. Museum admission is free.

Each Family Studio session is limited to 25 children, and is generally themed to coincide with a special exhibition or works from the museum collection, and includes viewing art before creating artwork with your family. Advance registration is required. The Family Studio program was launched in 2003 to provide families with kid-friendly tours based on the collection and special exhibitions, followed by art-making activities that combine what kids learned on the tour with their own creativity. Museum docents and staff collaborate to make the tour and art activity a seamless two-hour exploration of art and fun shared by adults and children.

Medications and Supplements

Natural Insight

Medications and Supplements

By Sabeen Faquir

In the traditional medical community, alternatives are known to be only possibly effective. With most alternative solutions, the medical community reports that there is insufficient evidence supporting its benefits. Although the mechanisms of medications are ALWAYS derived from those of naturally occurring plants, vitamins, and minerals, “alternative” solutions are, at times, derided.

Here’s the low-down: basically, what a naturally occurring alternative will do is chemically replicated in the lab and tested in vitro (outside a living organism), in animals, and then humans. The FDA outlines 5 steps in the Drug Development Process: Discovery and Development, Preclinical Research, Clinical Research, FDA Review, and FDA Post-Market Safety Monitoring. Side effects of the resultant drug may be similar to those of the alternative, or entirely different.

On every alternative container, you will find a disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. In fact, you find a similar disclaimer at the end of my articles. This is because the FDA regulates supplements differently than food or prescription drugs. Basically, this message is telling you the supplement did not go through the 5 steps of drug development. Thus, it cannot claim to heal you.

But, this does not mean it is not safe to consume supplements. The FDA still regulates dietary supplements and their ingredients. Just like with pharmaceutical drugs, supplement production adheres to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs). CGMPs ensure safety in manufacturing processes and facilities, for the consumer. The FDA inspects facilities worldwide to confirm compliance. There are requirements that must be met for personnel, the plant and grounds, utensils and equipment, batch production, laboratory operations, holding and distributing and more.

Are there supplements that are used as treatments in traditional medicine? Yes! Here are a couple to chew on: Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Vitamin K, Vitamin B3 and fish oil. As prescription medications, you will find them in higher dosages and at times, administered intravenously.

So, it is up to you, and your healthcare provider, to research and decide which traditional and alternative solutions could enhance your medical treatment. It is my hope that Natural Insight does so much as introduce you to different possibilities.

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery

Presents

The Young Stars of Lake Worth Art World

Will Shine This Night

Grand Galaxy Opening Friday, June 9    6-9PM

The Stars of the Lake Worth Galaxy of Young Arts will come out on Friday, June 9 from 6-9 PM at the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, 15 South J Street in Downtown Lake Worth.  Although there may not be a Red Carpet arrival, a Grand Gala opening is planned.  These are the creative, imaginative, opinionated and lovable children of the Children’s Clay Classes of the Flamingo Clay Studio.  Their works and their personalities are not to be missed.

Chloe

Caia, Chloe, Claire, Hazel, Jeffrey, Jillian, Lorelei, Matteo, Omar and Sophia are all practicing artists ranging in age from 5-9 years.  Every one of them knows that, “there is no such thing as a mistake in art,” so they feel free to experiment, discuss, challenge and create.  Each one has created an impressive body of work that will be shown for two weeks at the gallery.

Working in clay is a process best learned through gentle manipulation.  Forcing clay to do some things it doesn’t want to, will make the clay rebel.  The clay behaved well for all of these children.  They created self-portraits, animals, a variety of bowls, wind-chimes, beads and sugar paintings.  They applied under glazes, clear glazes and regular glazes.  They tested textured surfaces with different application effects.

One of the most interesting projects involved a science experiment.  The children created several plates each.  They coated the plates with a porcelain slip (alkali).  They used apple cider vinegar (acid) mixed with iron oxide, copper and cobalt.  Using eye-droppers they applied these chemicals to the alkali surface and got some magical results.  See for yourself when you visit the children during the exhibit opening.

In deference to the children, the cuisine for the evening of the opening will be milk and cookie-like.  Adults may expect a more grown up version of reception food.

The Grand Gala Reception is free and open to the public.  This is the first of many times these young artists will show in a gallery.  Fifty years from now you will see their works on Antique Road Show, and when they identify the artist, you will say, “I knew her/him when.”

Wellington Earns Top Honors for Budget, 22 Years Running!

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is pleased to announce that the Village of Wellington has received GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget for the 22nd consecutive time.

This award represents a significant achievement by the Village.  It reflects the commitment of Council and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.  In order to receive the budget award, Wellington had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.  These guidelines are designed to assess how well Wellington’s budget serves as:

a policy document

a financial plan

an operations guide

a communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

This year’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the 22nd continuously earned, and the Village gives special recognition to Budget & Reporting Director, Christine Wadleigh and Budget Analyst, Rubi Cabret for their significant contribution to the body of work that earned this esteemed honor.

There are more than 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program.  The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on FGOA’s website.  Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

“Realtors Take the Runway 2017” Fashion Show
Benefits Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation

Wellington, FL – May 22, 2017 –On Wednesday, June 14th, “Realtors Take the Runway 2017”, a fashion show and luncheon, will be held from 11:30a.m. until 1:30p.m. at The Wanderers Club located at 1900 Aero Club Drive in Wellington. The money raised will be donated to Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation.

The event, presented by Keller Williams Realty of Wellington and chaired by Maureen Gross, is designed to show the DO’S and DON’TS for dressing professionally in South Florida—sure to be lots of fun!

Twenty real estate agents will be modeling during the fashion show. “We have asked the top agents in town to join us and model. We will have someone representing almost every real estate agency in town.” explained Nancy Jennings, the broker at Keller Williams Wellington. “This creates great comradery among the agents as we all join together to raise money for a good cause—Hospice!”

As was the case at last year’s show, the fashions will be provided by Dillard’s from the Mall at Wellington Green. And, the fabulous Kelley Dunn, the news anchor at WPTV, has graciously agreed to emcee the event again this year.

“We were amazed at the support we got from the community last year and we are sure we will get it this year, too. Who doesn’t love Hospice and all the good work they do?” explained Jennings. “Having Kelley Dunn as our emcee certainly helps to stir up interest, too–our event, last year, was sold out in just 10 days! We are looking forward to another successful, sold-out event this year, too!”

For tickets, sponsorship opportunities or more information on the fashion show, please contact Maureen Gross at (561)714-0887 or email maureengrossrealtor@gmail.com.
