Movers Who Care

By Sabeen Faquir

Are you planning a move soon? Try Two Men and a Truck®, operated by Joel and Janelle Dowley. Originally working out of West Palm Beach, they recently opened up a location in Wellington! 2016 was their 12th year in business in Palm Beach County.

Joel and Janelle called Michigan home but are glad they decided to move here. They genuinely like to live in South Florida and felt it was a good chance for a successful business. They felt that compared to some locations in Florida, the West Palm Beach area was more vibrant.

Before settling in South Florida, Joel and Janelle researched the demographics of many states. They looked into factors such as average age, median income, and education level to find the best market.

“Anyone who has been in the area long, talks about ‘The Season.’ The meaning here is understood to mean November to April but ironically, the busiest season for Two Men and Truck is the summer! Still, winter business is more steady than for movers up north” said Joel.

“The Northern franchises do 75% of their revenue from May to September,” Janelle added.

Although their office in Wellington was operational in the fall of 2016, Two Men and Truck of West Palm Beach has been serving the Wellington area since it opened in West Palm Beach in 2005. Wellington has consistently been one of the top 5 zip code markets in Palm Beach County.

In addition to moving services, Two Men and a Truck offers packing and storage. They sell supplies like boxes, specialty boxes and other moving supplies. They have everything from packing paper to bubble wrap to picture boxes and wardrobe boxes. You name the object – they have a box for it. They also do crating for heavier decorative items.

The majority of Joel and Janelle’s business comes from residential moves. These are generally within Palm Beach County but they perform long-distance moves, too. Two Men and a Truck can move you outside the county or outside the state! They’ve even been to the west coast.

“Each move is unique. In some ways it’s the same – picking up and moving, but every move requires special attention. What needs special care differs from person to person. Moving is a very personal activity,” said Joel.

To prepare before a move, Joel and Janelle advise starting early.

“A typical family will use a move to simplify their life. They will get rid of things they don’t use or need. So, good things to do are to sort through your belongings and donate. Starting early will make the move easier and save you money,” said Janelle.

Joel and Janelle pride themselves on their customer service.

“We’re the best,” said Janelle.

“A lot goes into great customer service,” added Joel.

According to Joel, great customer service is defined by the customer, not the proprietor. It is Joel and Janelle’s responsibility to know what the customer wants. They adhere to the national tagline for Two Men and a Truck, “Movers Who Care.”

While Two Men and a Truck is an international franchise and the largest franchised moving company in the United States, it’s not just a corporation – it is a locally operated business.

“We hire qualified employees and know who we send out,” Janelle told me. The customer experience begins with who answers the phone so, Joel and Janelle only want to hire people with a passion for customer service. It’s important to add that they only use their own employees and don’t use day labor. Worker’s comp is provided and everyone is trained.

An example of how Joel and Janelle invest in their employees is demonstrated in the fact that they partnered with an employee to buy a Treasure Coast location. So, there is great potential for growth in the company. Their current operations manager was once a mover and the president of the company worked as a mover in college. Joel also told me about how just recently they recognized a mover’s accomplishment in becoming an accountant. “It’s bitter-sweet, but what should happen,” said Joel.

Every move has a survey that asks if the movers were polite, friendly and hardworking. It even asks if they were good to each other! Joel and Janelle have consistently gotten good feedback on their movers. This is because they are hand-picked and well trained.

Two Men and a Truck is unique in that it offers dynamic pricing, like airlines. Depending on their availability, pricing fluctuates. On slow days, there are lower rates. As a note, the last Saturday of the month is always the busiest. And sometimes, Joel and Janelle partner with realtors to offer pricing, packages and incentives. “We aren’t the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. That’s why we like to be a good value,” said Janelle.

Palm Beach County has around 60-70 licensed movers, not counting movers from surrounding counties. But because there are no other moving offices in Wellington, Joel and Janelle are filling a special niche. They don’t feel new to Wellington.  “It’s a logical extension. We think we can serve the area better by opening an office.”

Two Men and Truck was founded by a single mother. In the first year, they made only $1000 but gave it away between 10 charities. Giving back to the community has been the philosophy of the corporation from the start. In particular, Joel and Janelle like to provide for children in the community. They have worked with Families First and Forgotten Soldiers among other organizations.

Two Men and a Truck nationally partners with women’s shelters. To prepare for Mother’s Day, Two Men and a Truck collects toiletries and gifts to ultimately reach single mothers, nationwide. They begin collecting around February and March.

So if you’re planning a move soon, choose Two Men and a Truck of Wellington. Moving may be stressful but make it easier on yourself by choosing the “Movers Who Care.”

2017 WEF Begins

2017 WEF Begins

By Lois Spatz

The Winter Equestrian Festival 2017 season at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center and the Adequate Global Dressage Festival have begun. Which means that from now until the first Sunday in April, our Wellington winter wonderland hosts competitive horse jumping, dressage (think majestic horses dancing) and polo that feature riders and Olympians from all over the world.

Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo, AGDF Director of Sport Thomas Baur, Director of Adequan® Allyn Mann, U.S. Olympic Dressage Team Bronze Medalist Kasey-Perry Glass, U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team Silver Medalist Kent Farrington, three-time USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals winner Liza Boyd were all on hand to kick off the 2017 WEF season with a press conference on Tuesday, welcoming all of Wellington to experience the thrill and love of the equestrian sport.

At the conference Bellissimo emphasized the new infrastructure added to the show grounds based upon input from participating riders.  In addition to new footing, bridal paths and a new schooling area there is a 12 acre field with polo grass right off the Grand Prix Village, which completes the ESP package of including the International Polo Club to their portfolio. “It’s great to connect all the worlds of equestrian sport and discipline, to create an emphasis on the love of horses.”

As well as opportunities for equestrian education and community involvement, there is a new focus on sharing the bond of the equestrian experience with our youth.  PBIEC and the Palm Beach Rider’s Academy hold classes and competitions through the entire year here in Wellington and now young dressage riders will have the chance for their dreams to also come true at Adequate Global Dressage Festival.

“ For the first time, the new FEI Freestyle System will be in place, said Thomas Baur Director at AGDF. “ It is more objective because it is based upon riders following a submitted floor plan and how they stick to that plan. There is also a new app where spectators can score riders along with the judges.” Baur added that for the first time in the United States the Under 25 Nations cup has been added to the roster featuring focus on including younger riders. Each Friday through March 25, Friday Night Stars is a really a beautiful way to spend an evening with family and friends.

ESP hosts fabulous events throughout all its venues throughout the year, however the spirit of giving back is most apparent during the annual Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments at PBIEC. “So far we have given 10.7 million to 200 charities in Palm Beach County,” said Bellissimo. “100 percent of the money raised goes back into our community.”

GCC Executive Director Anne Caroline Valtin was on hand to encourage the community to attend on February 4 announcing the theme this year will be Cartoon Characters. To see world class riders, competing in sometimes outrageous costumes, working hard to give back to 35 local charities is something that should not be missed!

So perhaps for the next few months your schedule might look like this: competition and classes Wednesday through Friday, ( you can even lease a horse if you don’t have one)Friday night – Friday Night Stars at AGDF, Saturday Night Lights at PBIEC ( both start around 6pm) and Sunday at IPC having brunch and watching polo, ( main match starts at 3pm). Whether its all or one, it is something that we can truly experience right in our own backyard.

Bellissimo summed up his vision in one sentence, “It’s about unifying the love and passion for the horse across all different sports and disciplines and sharing it with our community.”

New Year, New You…Or Something

By Cheryl Alker

“New Year, New You,” “New Year’s Resolution Number One,” “New Beginnings”…………….. the titles go on and on. Either I have written such an article at this time of year or I have read a million very similar articles.  So for January 2017, as the writer of Around Wellington’s Health and Fitness article, I am not going to mention New Year’s Resolutions ……. Oh sorry, I guess I just did, but hey you know what I mean!

So this New Year I am going to give you something to try, something tangible, something to test to see if you may have been missing out on a vital component of your health and fitness.

It is no secret that I am a huge believer in the power of flexibility training. I have written training programs for continuing education credits, I have DVD’s featured on Amazon with five-star reviews, have written numerous Ebooks and health and fitness articles on the subject and continue to teach many clients on a day to day basis.  It is not that I believe flexibility is more important than the other components of physical fitness it is just that most people do not know the importance and benefits of flexibility training or how to achieve it successfully.

Improved posture, improved wellbeing, improved functionality and performance, reduction in stiffness and pain; I literally could go on and on but why don’t I let you be the judge and jury.

Below is a little test you can try to measure the benefits of flexibility training for yourself. See if you feel the difference. Oh, and by the way, if you are suffering from back pain you certainly need to try these stretches!

So here it is folks, my New Year’s gift to you all, ENJOY, or not, did I mention that stretching can be a little uncomfortable?!!!!!

Before you begin:-

  • Check with your Doctor or therapist. Is it safe for you to stretch?
  • Warm up first. Cold muscles will increase your risk of injury.  Take a short brisk walk and mobilize your joints first or stretch after your workout.
  • Hold stretches for at least one minute. It takes time to lengthen tissues safely, also time must be allowed for correct alignment.  Continually assess body alignment and learn to explore the muscle by changing leg arm or upper body position and weight applied.
  • Don’t bounce. Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle.  These tears leave scar tissue as the muscle heals which tightens the muscle even further – making you less flexible and more prone to pain.
  • Focus on a pain-free stretch. Expect to feel tension while you are stretching but not pain.  You should take the stretch to the point where you feel tension and then hold it, the feeling should go away after approximately 20 seconds, however, if it increases and the leg starts to shake back off and start the process again but more slowly this time.
  • Relax and breathe freely. Do not hold your breath while you are stretching results will be far greater if you increase the stretch towards the end of the out-breath.  Ensure you breathe deeply focusing your breath towards the front, sides and back of your ribcage.

Getting Started

  1. Lay on your back flat on the floor with both legs outstretched (not bent) and your hands by your sides.
  2. Take a moment to analyze what parts of your body are in contact with the floor/mat i.e. if you were laying in warm sand what impression would your body leave?
  3. Analyze your head position, shoulders, upper and lower back, pelvis, backs of the legs, knees, calves and ankles.
  4. Analyze the two sides of the body does one side feel heavier, lighter, longer, or shorter?
  5. How do your legs fall, in or out? Does one side fall in a different position to the other?
  6. Pay particular attention to how much contact you have or don’t have in the lumbar (lower) part of your spine.
  7. Is your lower back touching the floor, or is it pulled away from the floor?
  8. How deep is the curve?

The arrows on the stretches show you where you should drop weight and what should be moving away from each other i.e. in the stretch below weight should be dropped through the pelvis but you should lift the upper body away from the outstretched leg.

Mayor’s Column

January

By Mayor Anne Gerwig

Happy 2017!

The beginning of the New Year is a perfect time for us to reflect on the previous year and to determine our resolutions for the upcoming year. Whether it’s spending more time with the family, learning a new skill, adopting a healthier lifestyle, or volunteering and helping in our community, Wellington offers numerous programs, opportunities and activities that will help you keep those resolutions.

One very serious resolution we all must make is to promote safety and educate ourselves about crimes of opportunity.   Wellington has been focused on home security tips and has been spreading the message through our Wellington TV channel, social media, and our newsletter – “Don’t become a victim of a crime of opportunity.”  We want to remind residents to:

  • lock doors, including garage and sliding glass doors
  • arm security systems
  • report suspicious activity to PBSO immediately

Please watch our very informative Public Service Announcements available on our YouTube page: http://bit.ly/1RkJVRB.  We work with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to provide timely information and encourage safety throughout our neighborhoods.

To further our efforts, Wellington staff is partnering with PBSO deputies to attend neighborhood HOA and POA meetings.  We appreciate your continued efforts to keep our Village safe, and look forward to working with you.

Another important resolution for Council and staff is our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.  We have just released a comprehensive Public Service Announcement highlighting some of the ways in which Wellington is working to create a greener future. Click this link to watch: http://bit.ly/1k0LEwX. Wellington’s Mission is “to provide high quality services that create economic, environmental and social sustainability for residents.” Wellington’s efforts are multi-faceted and include:

  • Water conservation initiatives with reclaimed wastewater used for irrigation and low-flow fixtures using rainwater collected from rain cisterns.
  • Equipment and vehicle modifications to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Installation of native plants throughout Wellington.
  • Green purchasing guidelines in our infrastructure construction and material purchases.
  • Energy efficiencies include installing LED lights in all Wellington buildings and parks to use 75% less energy, along with reducing the quantity and timing of replacements.
  • Using Best Management Practices to address waste disposal with the production of fertilizer, increased recycling, and treatment of storm water.
  • Increased use of technology to reduce paper through electronic bill paying, permitting, and records management options.
  • Offering improved alternative transportation options for bicycles, walkways, golf carts, and horses.

Wellington’s Parks and Recreation Department is committed to offering programs and activities for the entire family.  On Saturday, January 28th and Sunday, January 29th, come out and show support for our local artists at Art Fest on the Green at the Amphitheater.  This is a free event which features music, food vendors, and one-of-a-kind art pieces. Here’s a look back of last year’s event: http://bit.ly/2hQSpWl.

Enjoy ongoing free entertainment at the Wellington Amphitheater with live concerts, movie nights, and local singers.  Our Thursday night Food Truck Invasion continues this month with live music at each event. For more details, view our January schedule here: http://bit.ly/219w2X7.

The Father Daughter Dance is scheduled for Saturday, February 4th from 5:30 to 9:00 pm.  Tickets are on sale at Village Park and will be available for purchase through February 4th or until the event has sold out.  Tickets are $50 per resident couple and $62.50 per non-resident couple.  Additional tickets may also be purchased at a cost of $20 per resident and $25 per non-resident.

If one of your resolutions is to get outside, stay active, and have some fun, spending more time at our wonderful local parks will keep you on the right track. Nature lovers can enjoy seeing dozens of animal and plant species at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary or exploring the trails at The Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat (Section 24). Don’t forget to stop by the many learning centres in the Preserve, as well as the six story observation tower.

Open Gym at Village Park is available to residents and non-residents. Make sure you register to participate. There are also numerous athletic programs for our younger residents including basketball, softball, soccer, Taekwondo, and many more. You can find more information and register for many programs on our website.

On behalf of Council and staff, I wish everyone the best for 2017.  There is so much to look forward to as we kick off this New Year; I encourage you to participate in our quality, fun, family-friendly events, and to stay active in our Great Hometown.  It is an honor to serve and work with you, and I can’t wait to see everyone around the Village this year and at all our upcoming events.
