SCIENCE CENTER GOES “GROSS” FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” to open on May 7

SCIENCE CENTER GOES “GROSS” FOR SUMMER EXHIBITION
“Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” to open on Saturday, May 7

Grossology_Imp

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) What is and is not snot – that is the question – and many more that will be answered by the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s summer 2016 exhibition, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body. Based on the best-selling book, the exhibition is described by leadership at the Science Center as fun, exciting and educational. It will open to the public on Saturday, May 7 with the goal of educating children ages 6-to-14 and their families about why their bodies produce mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly, stinky things, which many people consider gross.

“Kids love gross,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “The more gross, the more engaged in learning they become, which is why we selected Grossology as our summer exhibition. Grossology is incredibly interactive and is aimed at educating kids about their bodies and how they function. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to engage young Einsteins to show an interest in science – including getting ‘gross’ for the summer. It is also important to engage kids when they are naturally curious, so they continue to be curious. This is how future problem solvers are born, and we are happy to meet that need in our community as the leader for informal science education.”

Grossology takes visitors on a tour of their bodies, by way of Magic School Bus-style, as they literally step through the mouth of the exhibit. Once inside the exhibit, “Nigel Nose-It-All” will explain why people have runny noses, allergies and sneeze; “Tour Du Nose” takes guests on a tour through a nose replica – standing at 10-feet-tall; “Burp Man,” a larger than life cartoon character, who drinks from a three-foot-tall soda can pumped by visitors, details the cause of burps; and “Click Ick” allows visitors an opportunity to play nine different activities, including exploratory labs, puzzles, games and more. As visitors wind their way through 5,000-square-feet of human science, they will also learn about skin issues, “gas attacks” and vomit.

Grossology is based on the best-selling book by science teacher Sylvia Branzei. The colorful exhibit incorporates sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to actively engage visitors. Learning is achieved through the use of interactive experiences, challenges and just plain fun. Grossology was developed by Advanced Exhibits in collaboration with Science World British Columbia. Grossology will run through October 10, 2016.

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach and is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium during Grossology is $15 for adults, $11 for children ages 3 to 12 and $13 for seniors aged 60 and older. Science Center members and children under 3 are free. Planetarium shows are not included in general admission pricing. The Science Center is home to the only planetarium in Palm Beach County, which recently went through a major modern-day technology upgrade to feature the latest in quality advancements. The upgrade was courtesy of a $250,000 gift from the Marvin and Elsie Dekelboum Foundation.

Background: PB Parenting magazine started four years ago after Felonice Merriman moved to Palm Beach County with her young daughter and noticed there wasn’t a lot of information accessible for moms and dads to find out about fun things to do with their children and local family related resources available in the community. With a background in graphic design and publishing, she made PB Parenting a reality. During the first year of publishing, she teamed up with another local mom, Jennifer Preville, who had an extensive background in advertising and marketing. Together they have grown the publication to 15,000 copies which are delivered to over 700 family friendly locations in Palm Beach County and are available for free. In addition to their monthly publication, PB Parenting also engages readers via a weekly e-newsletter and their facebook page (www.facebook.com/pbparenting). For the past 4 years, the magazine has been providing parents a free local resource in print and online to help find summer camps. For the second year in a row, they decided to go beyond print and the web and provide families with a face to face opportunity to meet camps at their annual Summer Camp Expo.

HANLEY CENTER FOUNDATION PREVENTION TEAM ANNOUNCES SYMPOSIA SERIES ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE Industry experts to present in April, May and June; professionals can get free CEUs; public welcomed

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) Hanley Center Foundation, a West Palm Beach-based nonprofit, is taking the lead to keep community conversations about substance abuse in the forefront. As a next step in its expanded mission, which includes a much greater focus on substance abuse prevention across the state of Florida, the Foundation is presenting a “Spring Symposia Series.” Industry experts will present and discuss hot topics across several counties, including Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River, in April, May and June. The symposia series is free and open to the public, and also provides CEUs to professionals in attendance.

“As we continue to put a greater focus on our prevention education initiatives, we are thrilled to be presenting the Spring Symposia Series,” said Kae Jonsons, Hanley Center Foundation CEO. “This is an opportunity to expand our reach in the community by providing CEUs to professionals – and solid information to concerned community members. We are grateful to Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network for their continued confidence and support of our programming. Thanks to their funding, the symposia series is free to anyone interested in attending. We know the more people we can reach with our mission, the greater the impact on our entire community.”

Hanley Center Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to give hope to individuals, families and communities affected by alcoholism and drug addiction through access to high quality treatment, education, family support and community prevention programs. In 2015, the Foundation took steps to expand its mission and it now has a more comprehensive opportunity to help those who could not otherwise afford the hope that comes with recovery. Other funding now gives the prevention and education teams the opportunity to work with even more school-age children, adults and caregivers throughout Florida to prevent substance abuse.

The first event in the series, “Preventing College and Adolescent ADHD and Stimulant Medication Misuse,” takes place on Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 in Fort Pierce and Boca Raton, respectively, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. David Arnold, an authority on college alcohol and substance abuse prevention, will explore what communities can do to reduce medication misuse, reduce barriers to success and enhance communities and students. The day-long conversation will review current data and literature on ADHD misuse; explore current SAMHSA strategic prevention framework; review peer-to-peer education and support methodologies; and will include a group implementation and process discussion, so attendees can execute on specific ideas.

David Arnold joined the NASPA (Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education) staff in 2014, and currently serves as the director of health promotion and BACCHUS Initiatives. The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA supports collegiate peer educators and advisors by empowering students and student affairs administrators to create campus environments which are healthy and safe. Arnold first joined his peer education group as an undergraduate at the University of North Texas in 2001 and became a Certified Peer Educator in 2002. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work, Arnold continued to work with peer educators as an advisor and a professional staff member in health promotion and substance abuse prevention at the collegiate level for ten years. During his professional tenure, Arnold provided clinical and community prevention services for three large, four-year state institutions of higher education.

The Spring Symposia Series is sponsored by Hanley Center Foundation and the Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network and the State of Florida, Department of Children and Families.

The April 21 event takes place at the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex at Indian River State College, 4600 Kirby Loop Rd.; Fort Pierce. The April 22 event takes place at Palm Beach State College, the Boca Raton Campus, at 801 Palm Beach State College Dr.; Boca Raton. Six CEUs will be available through the Florida Certification Board, Florida Board of Psychology, Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling Florida Board of Nursing.

For more information about this event, or the May and June series, or to register, please visit www.hanleycenterfoundation.org, call Martha Putnam, 561-841-1215 or email martha@hanleycenterfoundation.org.

HANLEY CENTER FOUNDATION PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION Foundation serves as presenting sponsor for 2016 Dwyer Awards

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) Education is at the core of Hanley Center Foundation’s recently expanded mission and to celebrate the Foundation’s new era, it will serve as presenting sponsor for the 2016 Dwyer Awards to be held on Thursday, April 21 at the Kravis Center. According to Foundation CEO Kae Jonsons, supporting the Education Foundation and Economic Council’s 32nd annual Dwyer Awards is right in line with the Hanley Center Foundation’s local efforts to inform school-age students, parents and caregivers about ways to prevent substance abuse in communities across the state of Florida.

Dwyer Awards-9167

The William T. Dwyer Awards for Excellence in Education was established in 1985 to honor outstanding educators from public and private schools in Palm Beach County. Teachers from across the county are nominated by their peers at individual schools in one of five categories: Elementary Education, Middle School, Senior High, Special Programs and Career Education. A sixth category, STEM Education, was added to the 2016 Awards.

“Education is so important,” said Jonsons. “Our team at Hanley Center Foundation believes that educating our community about the dangers of substance abuse is critical to preventing tragic outcomes. Our prevention specialists are out speaking with school-age children, parents, caregivers and teachers everyday so we can raise awareness about this important topic. We value the partnerships we share with our educators, who we know are working so hard to make an impact. It is an honor to support the Dwyer Awards as the presenting sponsor, as we truly believe education is the foundation for future successes in all avenues.”

In addition to prevention education programs for schools, churches and other organizations, Hanley Center Foundation is also launching a series of substance abuse symposia which will take place for several days in April, May and June. The series will be open to the public and will also provide CEU credits to professionals who attend.

Established in 2005, Hanley Center Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to give hope to individuals, families and communities affected by alcoholism and drug addiction through access to high quality treatment, education, family support and community prevention programs.
