May, 2012 – Feeding South Florida Joins Palm Beach County to Fight Hunger

0

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS AND FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA COME TOGETHER TO PARTICIPATE IN STAMP OUT HUNGER IN PALM BEACH COUNTY

Nation’s Largest One-Day Food Drive on May 12 Gives Postal Service Customers

the Opportunity to Fight Hunger in South Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.  (April  3, 2012) – On Saturday, May 12, Feeding South Florida™ (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) will join letter carriers and Palm Beach County residents to fight hunger in South Florida with the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. To participate in Stamp Out Hunger, postal service customers in Palm Beach County will simply place a bag of non-perishable food by their mailboxes, which letter carriers will pick up during mail delivery.

Stamp Out Hunger is conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) in cooperation with the U.S. Postal Service. Letter carriersin more than 10,000 communities across America will pick up donated food items when they service their postal routes on May 12. In 2011, Stamp Out Hunger collected 70.2 million pounds of food donations nationwide, marking the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected by letter carriers.

In 2011, letter carriers collected and donated approximately 188,000 pounds of food for Feeding South Florida.Caring citizens can help letter carriers and Feeding South Florida top thisnumber in 2012.

Suggested donations include:

?         Canned meats such as tuna, salmon, chicken, turkey and ham

?         Canned chunky soups and stews

?         Canned beans, fruits and vegetables

?         New, unopened plastic containers of peanut butter and jelly

?         Dry goods such as cereal, rice and coffee

After they are collected, the items will be delivered to Feeding South Florida’s satellite facility at the Palm Beach Post, where they will be sorted and distributed to food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens in PalmBeach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties . This food will provide nourishment for families, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, veterans, and the homeless population, some of whom represent the newly unemployed.

Residents can also help on the day of the event by volunteering to sort food collected by the letter carriers. Volunteers are needed for afternoon and evening shifts, and must be at least 16 years of age.  To volunteer, contact Leroy Green, Feeding South Florida’s volunteer coordinator, at (954) 518-1863 or [email protected].

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 49 million Americans currently suffer from hunger. Over 930,000 of them reside in South Florida . Feeding South Florida serves nearly 600 not-for-profit agencies infour counties, and agency feedback shows that local demand for food services is up 39 percent due to the current economic climate. The state of the economy, as well as recent events such as one of Feeding South Florida’s refrigerated trucks and another truck’s refrigeration system being stolen, add to the need for increased donations.

Stamp Out Hunger also sustains area soup kitchens and food pantries during decreasing summer donations.  Many not-for-profits experience bare shelves during the summer, a crucial time due to the lack of school meal programs for the over 340,000 children who are food insecure inSouth Florida.

Stamp Out Hunger provides Palm Beach County residents with a very simple way to join the fight against hunger,” said Anthea Pennant, director of external affairs of Feeding South Florida. “Along with the NALC and local residents, we hope to top last year’s food donations to meet the increasing needs of those who are hungry in South Florida .”

“We’re excited to join forces with Feeding South Florida and local residents to help fight hunger,” said Starr Hunter, food drive coordinator of NALC Branch 1690, West Palm Beach . “The NALC is dedicated to making it easy for postal service customers to help feed the many people inSouth Florida who experience hunger.”

This year, Nick Cannon, multi-talented entertainer and member of the Feeding America Entertainment Council, is the national spokesperson for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Campbell Soup Company and its partners are producing post cards and shopping bags that will be delivered to more than 90 million homes across the country as a reminder to participate in the drive. In addition, Campbell will again support this year’s food collection effort by donating 1 million pounds of food to Feeding America.

iTaalk AUTISM FOUNDATION LAUNCHES NEW SOUTH FLORIDA OUTREACH PROGRAM TO HELP NON--VERBAL CHILDREN COMMUNICATE WITH iPADS

The iTaalk Autism Foundation is pleased to announce a regional outreach program that will benefit children and families of South Florida . The South Florida iTaalk Outreach hopes to educate these families on the beneficial uses of interactive technology for children with Autism and varying other special needs. It will provide qualified training to make the augmentative communication, such as iPads, iPhones, and iPods, more effective and functional in the home and classroom.

iTaalk will provide this training for little or NO cost to families, caretakers, and service providers in order to assure the success of implementing this amazing technology. The augmentative communication applications that are downloadable on the devices are designed for children with non--verbal communication disabilities, who cannot speak, or have language delays. The interactive programs can be used on the mobile devices or tablets to help these children learn to handle social situations and even develop reading, math and communicative skills.

Marlene Sickles of Parkland , Florida adopted her daughter, Shira, from an orphanage in Romania at the age of two. Her condition prevents her from speaking; leaving her unable to convey what she wants and needs. However, the iTaalk program will provide her with the iPad and a uniquely designed case, allowing her to make an incredible breakthrough. Shira, now 14 years old, will be able to communicate her needs for the first time by building sentences from relevant images, that teach by photo vocabulary, flashcards, storyboards, and routine.

Not only, does this technological advancement enhance education, but also improves the quality of life for entire families. The portability of the iPad will allow Shira to travel everywhere with it. Which will eliminate her feeling of isolation and frustration by building independence and helping her learn to reinforce associations between objects, people, and places. As well as, doing away with the family’s constant struggle of charades that lead to unmanageable behaviors and public meltdowns.

Sickles, witnessed  the results of her daughter’s success using a school’s issued iPad and joined forces with the iTaalk Founder and President, Brooke Olson, to expand the opportunities this program and the training sessions have to offer to the South Florida community. With the proper funding, the goal is to give all children with communication disabilities a chance to access this wonderful new and innovative technology.

South Florida iTaalk Outreach will be hosting its very first educational seminar on Saturday, April 21st, 2012. The training will take place at The Marriott Ft Lauderdale -- Coral Springs ( 11775 Heron Bay Boulevard Coral Springs , FL ) at 9am--2pm. The Cost: $20

*Scholarships available -- must be able to demonstrate financial need. All participants must confirm their attendance online at www.itaalk.org/southflorida.html.

“Please help us to make the South Florida community aware that iTaalk is now here to allow our children to be heard. All donations will help our children help themselves live a meaningful and productive life.

Visit www.itaalk.org/southflorida.html for grant deadlines and application details. We expect the first grant cycle to open June 2012 which is based upon expected financial donations. You can also donate used iOS devices and all financial donations to the South Florida iTaalk Outreach by visiting the Florida extension of the iTaalk website at: www.itaalk.org/southflorida.html. Itaalk is a 501©3 organization accepting financial donations to reach our goal for the children.

In this tough economy, Wellington residents can catch a break and receive a discount on their 2012 property taxes by signing up for the Installment Payment Plan offered by the Palm Beach County Tax Collector’s Office. Instead of paying taxes in one lump sum, property owners can make quarterly payments in June, September, December and March. Pay on time, and you’ll receive a discount of just over 3% on your property taxes.

The Installment Payment Plan is available to all Palm Beach County property owners with estimated annual taxes over $100. To enroll in this program, property owners must complete an application and either drop it off at any Tax Collector Service Center or mail it to the Palm Beach County Tax Collector, Post Office Box 3715, West Palm Beach, FL 33402-3715 no later than the close of business on Monday, April 30th, 2012. Applications are available electronically at http://www.pbcgov.com/tax/services_property_installment.shtml as well as every Tax Collector Service Center.
