Handling Back-to-School Blues
September, 2011
By Laura Zipris, Psy. D., LMHC
Dear Dr. “Z”- It is back to school time and every year I go through so much stress getting my children ready for school. The mornings are insane in my house. My two children are so slow to get ready and are so disorganized. In addition, they seem to be really resistant to settling back into doing their schoolwork after a long, stress free summer. I am so overwhelmed every morning and find that it affects my whole entire day, even after I’ve dropped my kids off. Help?
Signed,
End of Summer Blues
Dear “End of Summer Blues,”
Starting school after those “lazy days of summer” can be quiet tough for parents and children alike, but there are a number of things you can do to ease your transition. The two most important ways you can prepare yourself for your new school year involve: sleep schedules and routines.
During the summertime, many families are loose when it comes to bedtime. It gets darker later at night and children tend to naturally go to sleep later and wake up later in the morning. This is fine when you do not need to set an alarm clock. However, now that school has started things have to change. I would advise establishing some bedtime routines that include some quiet activities prior to sleep (i.e., reading books and listening to soft music) and an earlier bedtime, as a good night’s sleep is vital to functioning. Studies have shown that the negative effects of lack of sleep include irritability, decreased attention, deficits in short-term memory and inconsistent academic performance. The amount of sleep required for optimal functioning varies from child to child but on average, elementary school aged children typically require approximately 10 hours of sleep per night, middle-school children typically require 9 hours and high school aged children require 8 to 9 hours of sleep. Keep in mind as you attempt to alter your children’s sleep schedules that adjusting to new bedtimes takes some getting used to. Allow approximately two weeks for your children’s body clocks to regulate to this new schedule. You may also want to consider removing electronics from your child’s bedroom (i.e. TV, computers, gaming systems, cell phones), as they have been shown to contribute to a lack of sleep
Next, you must actively plan your morning routine. You will have to ask yourself a number of questions such as:
1. How much time will I need to get ready and then get the children up, dressed and fed? With this information, decide on what time will you wake up each morning. Build in an extra ten minutes to reduce morning stress.
2. Will I make lunches in the morning or the night before? I would encourage having the lunches prepared the night before to alleviate another morning stress if possible. Consider packing healthier lunches and snacks that will provide your children with energy and protein throughout their day.
3. Have healthy, nutritious breakfasts readily accessible for your children each morning and a few healthy meal options to take on the road, should you run out of time. Such items can include bananas, yogurt shakes, bagels, whole grain, low sugar cereals, etc.
4. Where will you store back packs? Keys? School Supplies? Inform your children that their back packs and necessary school supplies must be returned to the same spot each night so there is no frantic search occurring each morning as you are headed out the door.
Another very important daily routine that you should establish in your home should be a “homework routine.” Decide what time you will have your child begin their homework each day based on his or her individual needs (i.e. some children need to do homework right away and some work better after being afforded a snack) and schedules (i.e. after or before sports commitments). Whatever time frame you develop, try to stick with it. Provide your child a quiet, well-lit place to do their schoolwork. This homework center should be stocked with all the necessary materials your child might need (i.e. pencils, paper, rulers, etc) and should have minimal distracters (i.e., no television or younger siblings running around). For younger children, I would encourage you to consider creating a homework center that is in close physical proximity to you (i.e. kitchen table) so that you can be readily accessible should they need assistance.
You may feel that the school year has already begun and so you will just have to wait for the next school year to plan better but this is not true. It is never too late to start a good schedule or routine that your whole family will benefit from!
Signed,
Dr. Z

Miami Light Project presents
Mad Cat Theatre Company’s production of
WORLD PREMIERE COMEDY!
SO MY GRANDMOTHER DIED, BLAH BLAH BLAH
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY PAUL TEI
AUGUST 19, 2011 TO SEPTEMBER 10, 2011
The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse
Miami, Florida
MIAMI, FL July 21, 2011 – Miami’s Mad Cat Theatre Company has been committed to creating an alternate theatrical universe for eleven years now by specializing in their own brand of irreverent and always evolving, never arriving original plays. Now Mad Cat is continuing that tradition with the Miami Light Project which is presenting So My Grandmother Died, Blah Blah Blah at the new Light Box at Goldman Warehouse located at 404 NW 26th Street in the Wynwood Art Gallery District in Miami.
So My Grandmother Died, Blah Blah Blah written and directed by Mad Cat’s founder and artistic director Paul Tei (who moonlight’s on Burn Notice as Barry the money launderer), is no exception to the above ideology. So My Grandmother Died, Blah Blah Blah is the story of Polly Chekhov, a comedy writer in Hollywood, California who comes back to Hollywood, Florida for the wake of her beloved grandmother Mary. The play is about the deconstruction of a euolgy. A syncopated exposition of three sisters, the youngest Polly and her two older sisters. Polly has writer’s block which becomes the instigating action which is responsible for most of the conflict. Multiple characters, Polly’s eccentric family, a chorus of deconstructionists and a musician, carry you over the debris of endless cultural accumulations through a labyrinth of iconology. So put on your best blacks and head on over to The Light Box at the Goldman Warehouse because the pipes, the pipes are calling.
First test driven for one night, and called the Preservation Society as a part of the South Beach Comedy Festival, Tei has re-titled, re-worked and re-cast ½ of the original cast members (five to be exact) this inventive new play.
Now featuring Mad Cat Company members and some of Miami’s hot, hip and offbeat talent with Melissa Almaguer, Erin Joy Schmidt * and Deborah L. Sherman as the three sisters with George Schiavone and Beverly Blanchette as their parents, along with Anne Chamberlain, Troy Davidson*, Ricky Waugh as the chorus (a.k.a. the deconstructions) and Brian Sayre as the musician.
* Mad Cat Company Members
Tickets are on sale now! General Admission Tickets are $25, Student $12 (with valid ID) and Opening Night $50 (August 19) with applicable service charges, and may be purchased online at www.madcattheatre.org or calling OvationTix at 866.811.4111.
This production was made possible by Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, WLRN and Delaplaine Champagne.
Paul Tei: Born and raised in Hollywood, Florida, Paul is the founder and Artistic Director of Mad Cat Theatre Company. Having produced 30 shows in 11 years, mostly original works, written by himself and other company members, and providing South Florida audiences with an opportunity to engage in the type of low budget/high value theatre usually associated with Chicago, L.A.’s theatre row, and off off Broadway, Mad Cat has become a staple part of the ever growing cultural entre that is Miami. As an actor/director/designer/writer, Paul has worked all over South Florida’s theatre’s ranging from GableStage to Florida Stage, having appeared in about 50 productions and collecting a dozen awards including 7 Carbonell Awards (South Florida’s Tony Awards). He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA and has appeared in several films, several national commercials and has guest starred on the TV shows CSI Miami, CSI, Going to California, and most notably his recurring roles on USA’s Burn Notice as Barry the money launderer and Disney’s Zeke & Luther as Eddie Coletti. Paul received his MFA in directing at The Theatre School at De Paul University and his BA in Theatre from Barry University. He currently resides in LA.
ABOUT MAD CAT THEATRE COMPANY
Mad Cat Theatre Company was founded in Miami in the fall of 2000 by actor/director/writer Paul Tei. Its mission remains the same to this day: to create something new that’s exciting for you, us and them. A core group of designers and actors with one artistic director and eleven years later and 30 productions under its belt, Mad Cat is still clawing its way into the cultural consciousness of the citizens of Miami with original works such as “Shepherd’s Pie”, “Here in my Car”, “Tin Box Boomerang”, “Artful Dodgers”, “Terminal Baggage”, “Mixtape”, “Viva Bourgeois” and “Going Green the Wong Way” mixed with their renditions of previous produced play such as “70 Scenes of Halloween”, “Matt & Ben”, “Mr. Marmalade”, “Animals & Plants” and “Some Girls(s)”. Mad Cat has brought originality, vitality and bite to everything they have done. They’ve been received rave reviews and have been decorated with such accolades as best new works, best productions, best fringe theatre, best ensembles, best designers, best director from the Carbonell Committee, the Miami Herald, the Sun Sentinel, the Miami New Times and the Sun Post, but its the respect and return engagement of its fan base that makes Mad Cat purr.

When we trash the ocean, we trash our own well-being.
Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful Announces Locations for the
International Coastal Cleanup 2011
Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc.(KPBCB) welcomes help from volunteers for the International Coastal Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, September 17 with additional dates in September, October, and November in Palm Beach County. The cleanup is sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy worldwide and is coordinated locally by KPBCB.
As part of this effort across the globe, individuals take part in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways, identify the sources of that debris, and change the behaviors that allow it to reach the ocean in the first place.
During this signature event each September, hundreds of thousands of volunteers from countries all over the world spend a day picking up everything from cigarette butts and food wrappers to lost fishing nets and major appliances. Because trash travels to the ocean by way of storm drains and waterways, they don’t just work along ocean beaches; these dedicated volunteers navigate through mud and sand along lakes, canals, and rivers, often working far inland on roadways and neighborhood streets.
Many walk, while others set out on boats. Thousands more don scuba gear to seek trash below the water’s surface. People of all ages, from any walk of life, can participate. Friends, families, neighbors, club members, school classes—all kinds of people turn out on one day to work together in spirit across many time zones.
Working shoulder-to-shoulder, the volunteers in the Cleanup’s global network not only pick up trash, they record every item they find on standardized data cards. KPBCB compiles the data locally and the Ocean Conservancy compiles and analyzes the data worldwide each year, and publishes the world’s only item-by-item, location-by-location snapshot of marine debris in an annual report. By understanding what is out there, we can work together on solutions.
Last year, during the 25th anniversary of the Cleanup, in Palm Beach County alone, over 4,000 volunteers picked up over 29,000 lbs of trash from Palm Beach County beaches, lakes, and participating neighborhoods. From the information provided by volunteers, the source of most of the trash and debris comes from shoreline and recreational activities (52.54%) and smoking-related activities (37.29%).
This year in Palm Beach County, local volunteers will gather at multiple locations on September 17 with additional dates in September, October, and November. Most cleanup events begin at 8:00 a.m. with some alternative times. For a list of sites, dates, and times, please visit www.keepPBCbeautiful.org or call (561) 686-6646. Community Service Hours will be given. Volunteers should pre-register by contacting the volunteer coordinators listed for each site. Trash bags and other supplies will be provided and volunteers are encouraged to wear hats, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and bring water. Free ICC t-shirts will be given to volunteers while supplies last.
