SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM ANNOUNCES TWO NEW EXHIBITS

Attack of the Bloodsuckers and Tree Houses exhibits set to open May 21st

(West Palm Beach, FL) — Hang out at the South Florida Science Museum and your skin might not be the only thing crawling from two new exhibits, both opening on May 21st.  Attack of the Bloodsuckers and Tree Houses are sure to entertain, educate and excite curiosity through the hands-on, interactive exhibits.  The exhibits run through September 11th.

Attack of the Bloodsuckers will explore the science of what’s bloodsuckers-inflatabletickbiting you! The kid-friendly exhibition examines the biological wonders of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, leeches and other creatures that eat blood. Stinky feet can make you more attractive — to a hungry mosquito, that is. Learn why bloodsuckers are important to the ecosystem and how to keep them out of your system! Visitors can look a real leech in the mouth, receive a big hug from a giant inflatable tick, get itchy and knotty with the life-size game of “Twitcher” – a buggy variation on the game Twister or learn helpful hints for avoiding these sometimes annoying creatures.

“Both of these brand new exhibits will immerse our visitors in the facts and foibles of our ecosystem and the natural world,” said Lew Crampton, chief executive officer of the South Florida Science Museum. “They offer lots of fun and edutainment for all with a strong emphasis on hands-on fun and games. A perfect spring and summer excursion for the family that takes place in air-conditioned comfort.”

Spend time hanging out in the trees while exploring firsthand treehouseswho lives high up in the branches through stereoscopic viewfinders, tracking clues, natural artifacts and sound. The lively setting of the Tree Houses exhibit will have visitors roaming from tree to tree to house as they discover the many habitats that trees provide for animals large and small—and people, too.  Guests can look for signs of animal tree dwellers as they walk through an indoor tree house and across a wobbly connecting bridge, play a computerized forest game where they can harvest trees without harming wildlife, watch how a forest becomes a house, view the tree houses people have built around the world and even design and build their own, listen for animals inside the tree house and try to guess their sounds on an “animal dance floor,” or wander through a “kitchen” to discover not-so-obvious tree connections in our own houses.

The South Florida Science Museum delivers entertaining and educational journeys through the many worlds of science and technology for curious minds of all ages. Located just off I-95 and Southern Blvd. in West Palm Beach, the Museum features more than 50 hands-on exhibits, a digital planetarium, freshwater and saltwater aquariums, as well as natural history exhibitions.  New happenings at Museum include the Bugz exhibit, an Amateur Radio Center open on weekends and holidays as well as aquarium feedings and shark pettings on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. Each year the museum welcomes more than 125,000 visitors and reaches more than 45,000 students through workshops at the museum and outreach programs to local schools. Established in 1961, the museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to exciting curiosity and furthering the understanding and appreciation of science and technology.

The South Florida Science Museum is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach. Museum admission, which includes the exhibitions, is: Adults $11.95; Seniors 62+ $10.50; and children ages three-12 $8.95, children under three years and Museum members are free. May, 2011 – Making Time for Candy Land

0

Ask Dr. ZLaura Zipris

May, 2011

By Laura Zipris, Psy. D., LMHC

Dear Dr. Z.,

I am a working professional, a mother of two, and I am overwhelmed.   My biggest problem is that I always feel guilty that I have not given my children enough of me.   They are constantly in need of my attention and at times, I actually resent them for it.  How am I supposed to get it all done (i.e. cooking, cleaning, homework, dinner, lunches, laundry, etc.) and still have time to play “Candy Land”?  I can remember feeling sad and rejected growing up as a child and feeling that my mother was always too busy to play with me.  The last thing I want is for my children to feel the same way I did, but I know they already they do. Help!

D.S.

Dear D.S.,

You share the plight of so many other mothers who feel guilt, anger, and exhaustion from being pulled into a million different directions.  However, you are ahead of most in that you already have insight into the place that you are “stuck”… You are continuing the same “cycle of wounding” with your children that you experienced growing up.  How we parent our children reveals a great deal about how we were parented.  If you observe that you are struggling to find time to play with your children, it is likely that your parents were also “stuck” and unable to presence themselves enough with you.  I know that having this awareness can be disheartening, but it can also be an opportunity. When you know better, you can do better, so I encourage you to explore this further and deepen your understanding of your unresolved issues and unmet childhood needs. Though it may cause you anxiety, in the upcoming weeks, work on playing “Candy Land” first.  Then, you can work on getting some (not all) of the other stuff done.  This will be challenging for you and may seem impractical, but I assure you that by doing nothing else but being present with your children, you will grow and accomplish so much more.

May, 2011 – Spend Less Time on Email

Ultimate ProductivityClaudine Motto

Spend Less Time on Email, Accomplish More

By Claudine Motto

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with email – we love that it’s quick and easy, but we hate how quickly our inbox can mushroom out of control. Here are 5 simple and effective strategies to get control over your email so you can get out of your inbox and have more time for meaningful, forward-moving projects and tasks.

1. Stop checking it every 5 minutes. The constant interruptions waste more time than you realize. Decide how often you really need to monitor your inbox to see what’s coming in – the key is to find the balance between jumping at every new e-mail and not missing anything important. A quick and easy way to see results is to estimate how often you’re checking now, and cut that time in half.

Applications like AwayFind (www.awayfind.com) let you set the criteria for what an “urgent” message is to you and will notify you by phone, text, instant message or even Twitter – so you can work 100% focused without worrying that there are urgent emails lurking in your inbox.

2. Don’t just glance – decide. Opening and reading emails without doing anything with them is a total drain on your mental energy.  Take any quick (2-minute) actions you can as soon as you read an email – respond to it, file it, delete it, or turn it into a task or an appointment (in Outlook, you can do this by dragging the email into the calendar or task icons).

3. Cut down on the clutter. Every unread newsletter in your inbox adds to the clutter and creates a “should” – a source of guilt.  Your time and energy are limited – don’t waste it on anything that doesn’t absolutely deserve it – limit yourself to your favorite 2-3 newsletters (at most) in each major category of your business, career, or interests, and unsubscribe from the rest.

If you do a lot of research, or are a total information junkie, get in the habit of extracting the useful information into a program like Evernote (www.evernote.com) or Microsoft’s OneNote (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote) immediately after you read it, and delete the e-mail.

4. Use filters. Most email programs allow you some way to filter through what’s coming in (In Outlook, go to Tools > Rules and Alerts, or right click on the message you want to create a rule for, then click Create Rule).  Filters help you keep your inbox uncluttered and save you time – rather than make the decision with each mail, you’re making the decision once, at the filter level.

Filters are best for groups of emails that aren’t likely to be time-sensitive or important – for example, you can send newsletters to a “Read” folder, or send order confirmations to one of your reference folders.

5. Put email in its proper place. Avoid processing email during your most productive times of the day…for most people, that is the morning time.  If you know going into Outlook or your e-mail program first thing is likely to derail you, use your phone to check for messages and to reply to anything urgent. And don’t turn your e-mail program on until you’ve worked on at least 1 priority, high-level item.

Putting these strategies into place will take commitment and effort, but having control over your email will cut down on stress and free up time and energy you can better use for the things on your to-do list that matter most to you and your business.

200 Visitors to Lake Worth Raised $3200 for the Children of Jacmel Haiti

At the Haitian Empty Bowl Fundraiser

On Saturday, April 9, the streets of Lake Worth swarmed with 200 hungry donors, all participants in this year’s Haitian Empty Bowl Fundraiser.  The funds raised were for the Art Creation Foundation for Children in Jacmel Haiti.  On Monday, April 18, at a check signing ceremony at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery of Downtown Lake Worth, a check for $3200 was turned over to Judy Hoffman, representative of the foundation.  Also present at the ceremony were Mayor Rene Varela, Gail Pasternack, and Joyce Brown who presented the check to the foundation.  Photographer Durga Garcia recorded the event.

hatian-check-ceremonyOn April 9, over 200 visitors stopped into the Clay Glass Metal Stone, picked up hand made bowls donated by dozens of Palm Beach County artists, and began a feeding frenzy throughout the downtown Lake Worth restaurant district.  Visitors began lining up for their bowls at 8:00 AM. The event began at 10AM.  Favorite bowls of all shapes and sizes were chosen.  From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM hundreds of folks criss-crossed the streets over-stuffing themselves with some of the most delicious foods Palm Beach County has to offer. The three participating Pizza restaurants, Rotelli’s, Downtown Pizza and My Spot Pizza on Federal Highway evoked mass discussion on which was the best Pizza in town.  La Bonne Bouche served large portions of potent Rum Cake while next door the Cottage set up a buffet with a variety of salads and pasta.  Over on Lake Avenue folks zigzagged down the corridor from Fionentio’s to Dave’s Last Resort to Brogue’s Irish Bar feasting on spicy sausage and pasta dishes, corn and shrimp chowder and Italian specialties.  After a break to allow the food to settle they progressed on to Dolce Vita where wine samplings and chocolate were the order of the day and the Rum Shack for a pasta offering.  On to the Java Juice Bar and Nature’s Way Café for smoothies.  Heading East they stopped at Paws on the Avenue to pick up treats for their cats and dogs. Kilwin’s offered delicious ice cream and chocolate treats, Too Jays, cookies and Rita’s, Italian Ice, a refreshing cold treat on a hot day.  Across the street in the Cultural Plaza the Taco Lady filled the bowls with a variety of Tex-Mex goodies.

Potters and Clay artists throughout Palm Beach County contributed over 300 bowls to the event.  Gail Pasternack topped the list with over sixty bowls.  In addition, thirty of her closest friends participated in the event.  Tracy Rosof-Petersen and John McCoy thirty bowls each for the fundraiser and members of the Palm Beach Ceramic League collectively brought in over fifty.

Representing the city of Lake Worth, Mayor Rene Varela joined the celebration as the funds raised were turned over to Judy Hoffman, representative of the Art Creation Foundation for the children of Jacmel Haiti.  The children range in age from six to sixteen years and are the subject of a Nick News documentary with Linda Ellerbee, “Haiti Rising? Life in the Ruins. What’s it like to be a kid in Haiti, a year after a devastating earthquake?  The children are learning to become self-sustaining and to live cooperatively within their community through their participation in the creation of art.

Flamingo Clay Studio and the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery are the non-profit artist cooperative sponsoring the event in cooperation with the Downtown Cultural Alliance (DCA) the local Lake Worth Merchant association.

April, 2011 – Life Is Art Showcases South Florida at The Shops at Boca Center

Life Is Art Showcases South Florida at The Shops at Boca Center on April 30th, 2011

A full day of art, music, fashion, performance and more!
Right now, South Florida is one of the most exciting and dynamic emerging art scenes in the world. With numerous art walks popping up all over the area, many mega art fairs and festivals, and the largest art week in the world, the eye of the art world is focused squarely on South Florida. Yet, much of the local talent is left out of the explosion of artistic opportunity. South Florida is the home of many, many truly talented artists, all with their own unique voice and style, but it seems as if, in our rush to be a big-time player on the world art stage, we sometimes forget what we have right here.

Life Is Art, through the support of The Shops at Boca Center and StarMar Events, inaugurates the first Life Is Art Boca Center South Florida Artist Fair to celebrate and showcase what our area has to offer. This is a day filled with art and entertainment, featuring dozens of accomplished south Florida artists of all types, from emerging to experienced to world-renowned. The event also includes live music, fashion shows and even circus performances, all for free!

“This is a great way for The Shops at Boca Center to give back to the community,” states Candace Goldstein, manager of the center. The Shops at Boca Center, an upscale luxury shopping and fine dining center, is donating the space for the art fair. James Echols, co-founder of Life Is Art, said, “We are very excited about this opportunity to expand our mission of supporting the south Florida art community.” Life Is Art is a non-profit founded in January of 2009 that is dedicated to providing opportunity for south Florida artists. All of this is made possible through the support of StarMar Events; a comprehensive Event consulting, production and management firm. “When Life Is Art approached us with their needs for this event, we were more than happy to contribute to such a worthy cause and organization” states Marlene Quincoces, Chief Planning Officer.

This will be a full day of arts, culture and entertainment. With over forty visual artists represented, there will be a feast for the eyes. However, it does not stop there. Fab C Productions is producing two fashion shows and will be showcasing several south Florida based designers with cool vintage fashions. Motivational Edge, a music non-profit serving children, is bringing their student band, SoMeTiMeS Y to perform.

To tantalize your taste buds, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly is doing a free tasting for all attendees. Renda Writer, publisher of WeMerge Magazine, is going to be doing a live poetry reading. As if all this were not enough, there is even going to be a circus performance! Rainbow Circus, a premiere south Florida performance troupe, is going to be performing live acts of amazement. The day tops off with live music by Krisp, a hot local band playing your favorites and original numbers. DJ Silvio will be supplying the tunes all day to create a perfect background for the event.

This is truly an event not to be missed. The Shops at Boca Center are located at 5150 Town Center Circle in Boca Raton, FL 33486. The fair is taking place in the lush courtyard, surrounding the fountain. It is happening Saturday, April 30th, 2011 from 10:00am to 7:00pm, or later. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information about The Shops at Boca Center, please visit www.bocacenter.com. For more information on Life Is Art, please visit www.lifeisartfest.org.

The Opening Of Lake Worth Publix

With a Giant Sculpture of a Mermaid Made from Publix Tin Cans

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011 the Clay Glass Metal Stone gallery at 605 Lake Avenue will begin the construction of a Mermaid made from Publix tin cans to celebrate the grand opening of Publix in Lake Worth.  Artists from the gallery will begin construction using over 1000 cans from Publix and will work feverishly to complete the work by the grand opening the next day.  Construction will take place in the front window of the gallery.  At the end of the project all of the cans will be donated to the Lake Worth Calvary United Methodist Church to be used in their programs to feed the poor and homeless.

Leading the construction project is 81 year MaryEllen Dohrs, gallery artist and the first woman engineer and interior designer in the automobile industry.  She has worked for weeks on a schematic representation of the sculpture calculating the numbers of cans of each size and color needed for the project to succeed.  She is currently building the armature against which the cans will be placed.  Over a dozen artists from the gallery will work under her lead to build the final mermaid.  The public is invited to watch the sport of can stacking

Publix will generously be donating the cans used in the sculpture that will then be donated for distribution to the poor and the homeless as part of a meals program.  On Thursday the 28th of April the entire Lake Worth community will be welcoming Publix to the area.  Stop by the gallery to see the celebratory sculpture in the window.
