Zoom with an American Hero! Science Center’s Benefit Happening 11/5

0

(WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.) – One of our country’s most celebrated spy heroes is set to headline the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s upcoming benefit, “The Science of Espionage.” Scheduled for November 5, 2020 as a virtual event, “The Science of Espionage” will explore the undercover world of counterintelligence, and keynote speaker Eric O’Neill will regale the crowd with tales of how he was charged with gaining the trust – and ultimately contributing to the conviction – of Robert Hanssen, the most notorious anti-American spy in U.S. history.

In February of 2001, O’Neill used his clever talents and intellect to lure Hanssen out of hiding in plain sight. In the three months leading to the arrest, O’Neill was selected to work with the spy with the newly-minted Information Assurance Division, created to protect all classified FBI intelligence.

Now, O’Neill currently heads of The Georgetown Group, a premier investigative and security consulting agency in Washington, D.C. He is also the National Security Strategist for Carbon Black, an IT security firm. He also wrote Gray Day, the story of how he took down the first Russian cyber spy. The story went on to inspire the thriller film, Breach, starring Ryan Philippe as O’Neill.

Dubbed the “Smarty Party,” this annual lively speaker presentation follows a unique interactive format and encourages direct questions and answers from the audience.

“Our guests participating in ‘The Science of Espionage’ support the Science Center’s mission to open all minds to science,” said Kate Arrizza, President & CEO of the Science Center. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to open our doors to provide a safe place for learning starting Memorial Day. We made safety paramount to our programming while giving kids a clean and secure place to learn. Attendees of ‘The Science of Espionage’ allow us to continue that work. The virtual platform allows guests to attend in their pajamas from anywhere in the world!”

Tykes Bike for Early Childhood Education

Tykes Bike for Early Childhood Education

West Palm Beach, Fla. (October 12, 2020) – Preschool students at Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center are in training. They are increasing their workouts and concentrating on their nutrition in preparation to bike across the country. The 4- and 5-year-olds will compete in the Kids Race Across America (Kids RAAM) on Friday, October 23.

Kids RAAM at Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center

For the event, the parking lot at Opportunity’s Westgate campus will be transformed into a map of America. The course is a mini version of the Race Across America (RAAM), which takes cyclists on a 3,069-mile trek from California to Maryland.

The grownup version of RAAM has served as a fundraiser for Opportunity since 2017. Each year, a team of local cyclists led by Chris Huffman compete in the event to raise money for early childhood education. This year’s cross-country race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Aware that the public health crisis did not halt the charity’s needs and expenses, the cyclists chose to create a tricycle relay for the students.

“Kids RAAM is serving two purposes. Our children are learning the geography of the United States, age-appropriate math skills, bike safety, and how to work together as a team,” said Executive Director Ali Eger. “At the same time, it’s a chance for us to bring in the funding we need to keep providing childhood education and family development programs.”

The leaderboard for Kids RAAM will include 32 preschoolers. The tykes on bikes will be cheered on by their teachers, family members, and supporters during the two-hour relay. The media is invited to attend the event. The race takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Youth Dew

“YOUTH DEW”

A poem by Patti Thomas

Beautiful Betty

I sifted through my mother’s things: Her knick-knacks, letters, her sapphire ring,
The scarves she wore with fashion flair, the comb she used to style her hair,
A picture of my lovely niece, a music box that played “Für Elise,”
Shoes she bought but never wore, and clothes! My goodness! Clothes, galore!

Photo albums by the crate! (She lived till she was 98!)
Her purse with tissues everywhere, and jelly beans she’d never share.
A Christmas tree, just one foot tall, some doilies and a Swedish doll,
Her Bible and some Christmas cards, where old friends sent their best regards.

But what struck me the very most, what conjured up this maternal ghost,
Her perfume bottle, that’s the thing, I dust it off, remembering.
The bottle’s shape is one I know, around it is a gilded bow.
Take off the cap and spritz the air, and just like that, my mom is there!

As I inhale the nostalgic scent, I close my eyes and breathe her in,
No longer old and weak and frail, she’s young again, robust and hale,
She smiles at me and winks her eye, “Remember, I never say ‘good-bye’,”
I reach out to touch her face, but there is just an empty space,

She is not there, among her things, but I hear her when the chickadee sings,
Sometimes I’m surprised to see her, looking at me from my mirror,
I’ll feel her presence in the room, whenever I smell her sweet perfume,
I see her in my granddaughter’s eyes, for I know a mother’s love never dies.

Through the “Preserving a Legacy: Restoring the Historic Norton House and Artist Studio” campaign, the Gardens is raising funds to preserve Ann Norton’s 100-year-old home and studio. The renovations include repairing or replacing windows in the house as well as water-damaged floors, walls, ceilings, balconies and railings due to damage from Hurricane Irma. The Gardens has retained architect Timothy Hullihan, a third generation Palm Beach County native, to oversee the project. Hullihan’s background combines knowledge of philosophy, history, engineering, art and the natural world into his architectural practice.

“Ann Norton had a vision for her historic home, artist studio and rare palm gardens,” said Frances Fisher, Board Chairman at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. “She wanted to create a legacy – a special venue that would be left for the enjoyment and education of the community. The preservation of the Norton House and Artist Studio will guarantee that future generations can experience the magic of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. While renovations are underway, we welcome the community and visitors to enjoy the two-acre garden sanctuary this season with meaningful programs and activities.”

In addition, the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens has developed many impactful educational initiatives to reach a broader audience of families and students throughout Palm Beach County.  The Gardens will share facilities and collaborative efforts with several non-profit partners including the American Heart Association, the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Palm Health Foundation, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.

In addition, Enriching Lives with Minx Boren – A Conversation About the Essentiality of True Friendship will take place on May 14

The exhibition “Artists At Home: Photography of Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation” begins on April 17 and includes 50 images of artists across the country whose homes, studios and landscapes comprise the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios(HAHS) program, part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, including images of the Gardens’ namesake, Ann Norton.

“We are grateful to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for including us in such a distinguished program,” said Margaret Horgan, Managing Director for the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. “During this exhibition, we welcome guests to take a step into Ann Norton’s world, along with the worlds of the other notable artists included in the HAHS program. We are excited to showcase this exhibition in our grand opening celebration in April, especially since it was rescheduled from last year due to COVID-19.”

In conjunction with the HAHS exhibition, Valerie Balint, HAHS Program Manager, will present “Genius Loci: Preserved Artists’ Homes and Studios as Models of Creative Placemaking” on April 17, which explores the vitality of these historic places not only as beautiful and inspiring locales but also fascinating glimpses into the personal histories of the people who lived and worked in them. In addition, Tom Mayes, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel at the National Trust for Historic Preservation and author of Why Old Places Matter, will present “Sites of Creativity,” which will explore how places evoke feelings of belonging, continuity, stability, identity and memory, as well as history, national identity and architectural merit.

Artists At Home: Photography of Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation was made possible with support of the Henry Luce Foundation and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art.

(Delray Beach, FL – September 29, 2020) Just as Arts Garage brought back live musical performance to Delray Beach with Music At Home: Live From Arts Garage, the venue is now launching Theatre Live From Arts Garage with a live and simultaneously live-streamed performance of BUNKER, a one act play written by Sharonda Eccentrich Richardson, directed by Jonathan David Kelly, and starring Shanteala Mash. The timely and thought-provoking production will have one performance on Saturday, October 24, at 7 pm.

BUNKER dramatizes the story of Khalan and his mother as she finds herself becoming the very thing from which she is trying to protect him. This story of love reveals how wars may unintentionally start at home and the journey back to peace. Playwright Richardson asks the demanding question: “How do you raise a Black Boy with no manual?”

“As an artist, I am committed to creating work that speaks to the underserved communities I come from,” says director Kelly. “Not only do I use the arts as a way to spark dialogue for social change, but also as an instrument for healing. Before I create new work, I make sure to engage with community members through focus groups and open forum discussions, so that I have an accurate depiction of their individual social issues.”

Accordingly, immediately following the live/live-streamed performance of BUNKER at Arts Garage, the talented trio behind the production will have an open discussion on the condition of the African American Community as it relates “to raising black men in an effort to open dialogue, create solutions, and bring back the village.”

BUNKER explores an important concern facing many families today,” says Marjorie Waldo, the venue’s President & CEO. “Arts Garage celebrates community and believes that the Arts can be truly transformative by starting conversations and bringing people together. This amazing play is a perfect opportunity to do exactly that, whether you decide to watch it live-streamed from your home or with us live in Delray Beach. ”

How to Purchase Tickets to BUNKER:

The price for a live-streamed performance is $25, and $150 per table for in-person tickets. They can be purchased online at:https://artsgarage.org/event/theatre-at-home-live-from-arts-garage-bunker/

The Live Theatre Experience at Arts Garage

For the in-person audience, Arts Garage is selling tables of 2, 4 and 6 that will be placed six feet apart. Concessions will be served table-side or chair-side, and—to reduce crowded common spaces—there will be no intermission.

Additional health and safety precautions have been implemented. For example, all Arts Garage staff and volunteers have been trained on safety and sanitation practices by management, with mandatory temperature checks at the start of each shift. Face masks are required.

Requirements for Patrons

+ All tickets, both live and live-streamed, must be purchased in advance.

+ Please bring the printed or electronic tickets to encourage touchless entry.

+ Wear a face mask when entering Arts Garage.

+ Maintain six feet of separation before, during and while leaving the concert.

+ Immediately take seats after arriving to avoid gathering in the gallery.

“Arts Garage is doing everything we can to keep patrons safe, and we ask our fans to do the same,” adds Waldo. “In particular, we ask people to please stay home and view the performance online if they have any symptoms, including fever, that may be indicative of coronavirus.”

BOCA WEST COUNTRY CLUB A WINNER OF
THE SOUTH FLORIDA TOP WORKPLACES 2020 AWARD

BOCA RATON, FL, October 12, 2020 —  Boca West Country Club has been named a Top Workplaces 2020 honor by The Sun Sentinel. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage, LLC. The anonymous survey uniquely measures 15 drivers of engaged cultures that are critical to the success of any organization: including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

Matthew Linderman

Matthew Linderman, CCM, COO, President and General Manager of Boca West Country Club, was named top Leader for a Large Business in the Specialty Award category.

“We are thrilled that the members of our Boca West team have rated their life at work so highly.  The Board of Governors, members, management team and I treasure our employees and we have always strived to treat them with the utmost respect and dignity.  We are very proud of our work culture and comradery, so this highly respected honor is proof that we are doing something right,” said Mr. Linderman.
