A Whole Month of October Fun and Games

October on J Street in Downtown  Lake Worth will be a Freaky Family Festival of evenings of Fantasy, Fright and Fun.  The entire street will participate with candy, contests, concerts and costumes.  “J” Street will be  filled with hay and pumpkins and will be an epicenter of events.  Look for a month of  Costume Contests, Arts Exhibits,  Out-Door Festival Shows and Trick-or-Treating taking place throughout every venue on J Street.  The fun starts at the stoke of October Eve, and continues into November.  All events are free to the public. The entire street and windows will be decorated for the upcoming holidays.

 

 

Saturday, October 1:

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery is hosting a Judaica Arts Festival that continues until October 5.  Enjoy the specialty art works and food of the many artists celebrating Jewish tradition.

 The BXBeer Depot will be hosting a Brew Competition from 2-5 PM  with German Style Beers. They will be serving refreshments.

Common Grounds Coffee Bar presents International Coffee Day featuring activities, give-aways and games all day long.  They will be serving Pumpkin Pie Latte, Pumpkin Bread, Hot Spiced Cider, and more.  Live music from 7:30-9:30

Sunday, October 2, Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery sponsors a Potato Latke Contest as part of its Judaica Arts Festival. First prize will be a Menorah, Second Prize a Mezuzah and Third prize a Dreidel.   The Judaic Arts Festival continues to Wednesday, September 5.

Wednesday, October 5 is Teacher’s Appreciation Day at Common Grounds Coffee Bar. Bring you teacher ID for free treats, or 1/2 off specialty drinks, all day.

Friday, October 7:

 The Cat-O-Strophic Affair opens at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery. This is a show all about CATS of all kinds  and for Cat lovers everywhere.  (Look for the Cat Costume Contest next Friday Evening)

The Lake Worth Arts Market, a group of artists and culinary artists, will kick off a weekend of Cat-Like events outside of the gallery.  Maria Paz will hold a Cat-Painting Workshop. For $25 you will be taught how to paint and take home a cat on canvas (you will not be painting a live cat!)

The Bamboo Room holds its weekly Ballroom Dance Lessons and Party.  Hor d’oeuvres are served.  561-247-7621 for reservations.  Spend your Friday Evening dancing the night away.

BX Beer Depot is hosting  a Tap Takeover with DueSouth Brewery from 6-9PM

Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9, J Street fills with art lovers for the annual  Art-Ober Fest sponsored each year by Propaganda.  Artists line the streets, food vendors tempt taste buds and music pours out from the stages all along J Street.  This event brings thousands of guests to town each year and is free to the public.

The Second Saturday Sidewalk Sale comes to J Street.  Along will everything else to see and do on J Street, your J Street Merchants will be setting up special sales, every Second Saturday in front of their shops.  J Street Junction is your destination for unique bargains and special events all day on these Saturdays.

BX Beer Depot opens the J Street Pumpkin Patch this weekend. The pumpkin patch will be filled with art, hay and pumpkins.  It is a wonderful photo opportunity for families, and a great place to buy your holiday pumpkins.  Some of the proceeds from the pumpkins with go to charity.  The depot will also be featuring Pumpkin Beers and Ciders.

The Bamboo Room will have a full schedule of live music for Art-Ober Fest both Saturday and Sunday with lots of great food and drink, as well.

Common Grounds Coffee Bar will feature Utterance Open Mic with local talent.  Sign-up is at 7PM.  Performances begin at 7:30.

Friday, October 14, Cat Costume Contest will be held at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery. (Part of Cat-0-Strophic Affair)- Cats cannot be herded into wearing a costume, so people must wear the cat costumes to win first, second or third place prizes.

Saturday, October 15, The Lake Worth Arts Market sponsors a Holiday Decorating session.  Paint your table decorations on Palm Fronds.  Pick up your holiday pumpkins at BX Beer Depot, for carving.     The Arts Markets will be on the parking lots of Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery all day Saturdays and Sundays.  Painting session begins at 2 PM on Saturday afternoon. Head over the Common Grounds Coffee Bar with your decorations for you Orange Spice Latte.

Thursday, October 20 Poutine Dog is holding a food and beer pairing in partnership with CopperPoint at 6PM

Friday, October 21, Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery opens the exhibit, Day(s) of the Dead. This annual event brings artists out of their bat caves and into their most ghoulish and skeletal depictions of holiday eeriness.

Common Grounds Coffee Bar holds its regular game night every Friday evening with tournaments and prizes.

Saturday, October 22, The BXBeer Depot joins forces with Poutine Dog in with its first annual Chili Cook-off Contest   Bring you best chili taste buds for a delicious treat. Artists will have homemade chili bowls for sale to take home as souvenirs.    City officials will judge this contest.

 

 

Friday, October 28:

Bamboo Room holds its First Annual Masquerade Costume Ball. The Festivities start at 8 PM.  Costs are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  Don your formal wear, and don’t forget a mask.  Hor D’oeuvres, Mock-Tails and Give-Aways.  Call 561-247-7621 for reservations.

Friday, October 28- Pie Baking Contest and  Face Painting at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery:  Back you best holiday pies and bring them to the gallery to be judged.  Top three winners get prizes.  Local celebrity judges.   Face Painting at the Lake Worth Art Market on the lot of the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery.  Have yourself or your children painted by some of the region’s best artists.

Saturday October 28 & 29- The BX BEER Depot will be hosting a Halloween Costume contest  with fun games and prizes.  Guess the amount of candy corn in the jar, apple bobbing, pumpkin toss, seed spitting and lots more.  Let your inner child break loose, or bring a real child with you.

Sunday  October 30  – Pumpkin Carving Contest and J Street Trick or Treat: Think of the BEST Halloween ever, and you will find it on Sunday at J Street Junction

The entire J Street Junction is open on Sunday for trick-or Treating. Bring the family down to J Street and every shop will have something fun for you to do.  If you are a Pumpkin Carver, head over to the BX Beer Depot Pumpkin Patch and pick your pumpkin for the contest.  Carve the best pumpkin and win the biggest prize. Look for special fun at the Lake Worth Art Market, at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery, Bamboo Room, Common Grounds, Poutine, and at the Pumpkin Patch at BX Beer Depot.

Boca Raton, Florida-On Thursday, October 6th and 13th the Florida Intergenerational Orchestra will be having an open house for all musicians, and youth scholarship auditions for those new musicians under the age of 18 from 7 to 9 P.M. at Edgewater Point Estates, in the ballroom on the second floor at 23315 Bluewater Circle (corner of SW 18th St. and Powerline Rd)  Boca Raton, Florida 33433.

This remarkable orchestra comprised of musicians spanning the ages of 9-96 has over the past eleven years delighted audiences.  The gifted founder/conductor, Lorraine Marks-Field, semi-finalist this year for the American Prize in conducting a Commmunity Orchestra, deftly blends the different abilities of the members of the orchestra. . The FLIOA breaks the boundaries of the usual orchestra concert and redefines the stereotypes about orchestra musicians.  Florida Intergenerational Orchestra concerts are engaging and fun for the whole family; everyone leaves with a smile.

The orchestra will also commence its 12th season, a season of celebration, with its opening concert “Celebrate the Holidays with Love”on Sunday, December 11th, with a pre-concert talk  (at all the concerts), hosted by its celebrated conductor, Lorraine Marks-Field, at 2:30 P.M. followed by the concert at 3 P.M. at O’Shea Hall on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, located at 22094 Lyons Road (corner of Lyons and Palmetto.)  The initial Celebration, the first of the trilogy, will celebrate the best holiday music Hanukah and Christmas of our time,  and also the 50th Anniversary of two of our prominent orchestra members, who will renew their vows during the concert.  This shouldn’t be missed and tickets will be hard to come by, so make your reservations in advance. Tickets are $10 for adults, children under 12 are free.  Doors open at 2:15 p.m.Call at 561-482-8206.

Palm Beach Combat Hapkido, in cooperation with the Village of Wellington’s recreation Hapkido program, will host a Women’s Only Self Defense Seminar with Master Trina Pellegrini, on Saturday, October 1st, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Village Park, 11700 Pierson Road.

Trina Pellegrini has 25 years of Martial Arts experience and has conducted seminars in the United States, Europe, and New Zealand. She is a Master Instructor in Combat Hapkido, a Black Belt in TaeKwonDo, and Tai Chi instructor. She founded the TRU System (Trained-Ready-Unafraid) for Women, and has been featured in TaeKwonDo Times Magazine, and Budo International Magazine.

This is a women’s only class and will focus on techniques women can use to protect themselves. The cost is $50 per participant, or participants can take advantage of a “2 for 1 special” for mother and daughter pairs!

What will you learn?

• Situational awareness, breakaways, ground techniques
• Simple but effective techniques if you are grabbed
• Exercises to help tone you up that have a self-defense application

Jupiter, FL: The Humane Society of Greater Jupiter/Tequesta dba Furry Friends is proud to have presented the Hang 20© Surf Dog Classic to the community for a second straight year.

Despite fears of an impending storm, August 27 started with perfect weather at Carlin Park. The skies were clear and the waves just the right size for our canine surfers.
The event welcomed 28 vendors selling everything from yoga clothes and bracelets to doggie ice cream and chiropractic care. Among the vendors were Off The Mat, Talizmani, Papa Chiropractic, Pinups for Pitbulls and a myriad of others.
The Civic Center was headquarters for kids activities provided by two local churches, New City Church and ­­­­Oceanview Methodist Church
as well as the wonderful music performed by Brett Staska and the Bryce Allen Band.
The beach was filled with about 2800 attendees with smiling faces and dogs enjoying the amazing site of dogs surfing! The surfing heats started at 8:30 with a heat for small, medium and large dogs as well as a SUP (stand-up surf board) heat. All in all, about 30 dogs participated in the fun. Among the winners were Waldo from Sebastian, recued by Susie and Mike Leverette; Molly and her mom Peggy Leach; Mr. Gus with dad Mike Eakes and Furry Friends resident rescue dog and surfer, Good Boy.
Thanks to our many sponsors including Campbell Property Management, Bala Boutique, Palm Beach Parking and Ocean Magic Surf Shop. We greatly appreciate the numerous other participants including the surf contest judges, merchandise vendors, food trucks, Purina dog agility team, exhibitors, Palm Beach County, Town of Jupiter, committee members and the wonderful volunteers who helped make this event an astounding success!! A special thanks to SurFur Dogs for the many weekend days spent training pups to be surf dog champions!!

Jupiter, FL- (September 14, 2016) The 14th Annual Feast of Little Italy presented by Arrigo Fiat of West Palm seeks to unify the community again. This November as Americans prepare to vote, the Feast of Little Italy organizers would like to remind people that Abacoa will be the place where we can all come together and be one big family. Created on the values of family, friends, food, music, and culture, the Feast of Little Italy has become an annual tradition for South Florida. Putting aside all of the politics that divide us, come November 4, 5, and 6th to experience and create memories with family and friends while enjoying authentic Italian food, entertainment, festival rides, games, bocce and more. For generations families have been coming to the Feast, now in its 14th year Jerry Somma, Feast president says “This is a special year, we are coming together to celebrate passion; passion for family, friends, music, and heritage and right now our country feels a sense of passion. Regardless of your party preference, we say come together this weekend and be Italian and there is no challenge too big that a good cannoli can’t solve.”
Entertainment
This year’s entertainment will celebrate Italian and Italian American artists throughout the weekend appearing on the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center stage. Headlining this year’s Feast will be Salvatore Valentinetti (Heidi Klum’s golden buzzer) a finalist on NBC’s 2016 America’s Got Talent. This young crooner will seduce the audience with his smooth vocals from Dean Martin to Frank Sinatra Friday night. This year’s Grand Marshall, the one and only, Joe Piscopo an actor, singer, musician and comedian most known from Saturday Night Live, will perform on Saturday night, it’s a show filled with music and laughs. The legendary Tommy Mara and The Crests featuring his big band will close out the Feast. As a tradition every year the crowd gets bigger to hear Tommy Mara (known as The Pavarotti of Doo Wop) hit high falsetto notes from “Cara Mia,” “The Angels Listened In,” the hit “16 Candles,” and many more. Feast favorites will also include local romantic performer Franco Corso and the classically trained Elio Scaccio with their silky smooth vocals, they will have the audience in the palm of their hands with their classic Italian songs. Then, it’s time to get down with daughter of Italian immigrants, Maria De Crescenzo who tours with KC and the Sunshine Band, and has for the past twenty years as a backup vocalist will make her Feast debut.

Food and Wine Seminars
Each year national and local chef’s come out to the Feast and instruct the public on how to cook a specialty dish. In the Galbani cheese cooking pavilion free cooking demonstrations are offered. Galbani cheese has crafted the finest Italian cheese for over 100 years. The cooking pavilion will be filled with nationally known chefs most notably, Marco Sciortino from the hit TV show “Come Dine With Me”, local celebrity cook Virginia Sinicki from the KVJ show on 97.9 WRMF, and chefs from the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center will be serving up some light options to taste. Chef Nina Tomasik of Nina’s Bakery will be showing off her talents of creating art on dessert and cakes. Come get a taste of Italy throughout the weekend. Seminars will be held Friday 5pm-7pm, Saturday at noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm and Sunday noon, 2pm and 4pm. To compliment the palate of food, Voga Italia is the proud wine sponsor celebrating ten years of taste and style. Their collection ranges from white to red, and sparkling to sweet. Join us as world renowned wine connoisseur Anthony Acampa takes you on a journey with your palate. Free wine demonstrations will be held Friday at 6pm, Saturday at 3pm, 5pm, and 7pm and Sunday at1pm and 3pm.

Food
With every step you take in Abacoa, there will be a food vendor serving up an authentic dish; from pasta, pizza, and sausage and peppers to shrimp scampi and pinwheels to much more. The aroma of Italy will surround you and every bite will keep you hungry for more. Come get a taste from dishes from both south and northern Italy ranging from, seafood pescatore, calamari, antipasto platters, Italian mac and cheese balls, fried raviolis and Italian Chicago beef fried calzones. Then, don’t miss all of the Italian dessert with homemade zeppola’s, sfogliatella, and cannolis. Joseph’s Classic Market will be on site selling their homemade products and cooking up some of the area’s local favorites. If Italian food is what you love, then sign up for the Costello’s pizza and lasagna eating contests led by radio personalities Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington from the KVJ Show on 97.9 WRMF.

Tradition/Culture
The Italian culture is all around you at the Feast, it’s not just about what you are eating but what you can enjoy and to share in the Italian traditions with your family, friends and neighbors. Peppino is the strolling accordion player (accordion was first produced in Italy in the 1860’s) and he will remind you that the cheerful sounds have been heard for generations as he plays classic Italian music. Bocce ball was first played in Ancient Rome and at the Feast there are courts available for the public to give it a try. The Italian folk dance known as “Tarantella” will be taught in front of the stage immediately following performances from the Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts on Saturday and Sunday. A Feast must is to shop and explore all of the vendors selling Italian garb from T-shirts and Italian jewelry to home must have’s for every kitchen.

Family Fun
After eating all you can eat, the children’s area will be ready for you. Filled with thrilling festival rides and prize winning games, the Feast will create memorable moments to share. Then, bring your kids to get their faces painted and watch them smile.

Charity
Little Smiles is the official charity of the Feast of Little Italy. Little Smiles will be on site raising awareness with kids activities as well as accepting donations. This is a volunteer driven, non-profit 501(c) 3 children’s charity. Their mission is to help heal hearts and create little smiles by providing gifts and fun activities to children impacted by serious illness, homelessness or tragedy. With the guidance of local professionals such as doctors, nurses, child life specialists and social workers, we strive to help kids escape their unfortunate circumstances, even if only for a short period of time.

Fifteen years ago we started with a vision to create an experience rich in Italian culture. We look to celebrate the contributions of great Italians through food, music, art and tradition. Today as we stay dedicated to encouraging the importance of family and community we hope to stay mindful of the hardships that our ancestors endured in migrating to this great country. Public invited to free workshops September – December with final installation set for February 2017 during International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium

Boynton Beach, Fla. (August 22, 2016) Following the success of the February 2015  Kinetic-Connections, which won the People’s Choice Award for the transformation of an historic kapok tree into living kinetic art, artist Elayna Toby Singer announces her next community creation, Kinetic Intentions. The public is invited to take part through a series of FREE mini-mobile making workshops and the largest temporary kinetic, tree art installation in Palm Beach County. The multi-part Kinetic Intentions is part of the City of Boynton Beach’s 2017 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium which takes place February 3 – 5, 2017.

The first phase of the participatory art project features a limited number of free countywide workshops from September to December that explore “the Art, Science & Soul of Making Mobiles” under the guidance of Elayna Toby Singer.  Each mini-mobile will be constructed using fishing line and recycled seed pods from Florida’s Mahogany trees which are threatened to extinction in the wild. Participants will experience the centering, meditative process of mobile making while pondering their intentions for personal and environmental balance.

Inspired by the Tibetan Prayer Ribbon tradition, workshop attendees will also write their personal intentions onto ribbons which will be affixed, along with the mini-mobiles, to the final kinetic art tree installation in February 2017.

The next phase of Kinetic Intentions takes place February 3 when Ms. Singer creates an outdoor, kinetic “room” by attaching cables between four trees in the park east of Boynton’s Civic Center. Once the connecting lines are secured, she will hang 150 six-foot long kinetic strands creating a curtained “room.”

The public is invited to write their own Intention Ribbon, select one of the 500 mini-mobiles on display from the workshops, and then add both to one of the 150 six-foot kinetic strands, bringing the art setting among trees to life during the free International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium, on February 4 and 5. Names of all workshop attendees will be entered into a drawing to receive one of the 150+ kinetic sculptures at the end of the kinetic art weekend.

The Kinetic Intentions free workshops, open to everyone aged 13 and up, are scheduled as follows:

Sunday, September 18 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm at The Box Gallery, located at 811 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach.

Sunday, October 9 from 3:00-4:30pm at Bootz Cultural Arts Center, located at 420 S. State Rd 7, Suite 118, in Royal Palm Beach.

Wednesday, November 9 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Unity of the Palm Beaches at Temple Israel located at 1901 N. Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach.

Further workshops will be announced within the coming month.

Kinetic Intentions, a creation of artist Elayna Toby Singer, is commissioned by the City of Boynton Beach’s Art in Public Places. Singer has been creating kinetic art sculpture and jewelry since the mid 1990’s and incorporating “found objects” since 2003. Locally, her commissioned works and exhibitions have been shown in Palm Beach and Broward Counties for more than six years. In 2009, Elayna Toby was invited by Habla: The Center for Language and Culture in Merida Mexico, to lead her first “Natural Mobiles” workshop. With a BS in Cultural Anthropology and an MS in Public Horticulture and Museum Management, Ms. Singer’s career in creative placemaking began in the early 1990’s when she spent fifteen years in some of the nation’s leading public gardens and arboreta creating experiences that engaged the public in the art, science and heritage of plants and the essential role they play in our lives.

Created by the multi-talented, multi-media artist Elayna Toby Singer, Kinetic Intentions  is a joyful and exuberant temporary Public Art Project that follows in the footsteps of the artist’s award winning Kinetic Connections project  that generated so much public attention in 2015.

This inspiring county-wide project intends to engage and entertain the community through free, artist-led mini-mobile workshops, in which participants will be guided through the art, science and soul of creating art that moves.

As a crescendo to the workshops, Elayna Toby Singer will create a seemingly magical, motion-filled outdoor curtained “room” of 150 six foot long kinetic strands anchored by four trees. This “living” room will be festooned with the kinetic mini-mobiles and intention ribbons during the International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium February 3– 5, 2017.

The entire community is invited to write his or her own Intention Ribbon, select one of the 500 mini-mobiles crafted in the workshops, and then add both a mini-mobile and intention ribbon to one of the 150 six-foot kinetic strands, bringing this artful setting among trees to life.

I/we have a dear sweet friend, a Fellow Entertainer here in Florida. She goes by the name of Lucy Lucy Faircloth. This event is open to the public…please spread the word.
Many of you may know her, many of you have seen her at fairs and other events impersonating Lucille Ball. Many of you received your start on Stage and in the Entertainment field by performing at her events. She has attended many Fundraisers helping others, and now we are asking you to please attend a fundraiser to help her and her boys….
This very kind and warm woman is suffering and in pain. She is the mother of two very young beautiful boys. Who obviously like all little boys need their mother. Her youngest son asked her the other day “Mommy can people live forever?”
It has been hard on Lucy Faircloth and her young boys, because she has for years been dealing with Terminal Cancer…. She has been putting up a strong fight against Cancer with the help of doctors and other caregivers throughout the years. However, even they have not been able to stop this horrible disease…it is spreading throughout her body and she needs surgery again… this surgery which will now take her ear, and maybe even more is going to happen very soon…
Lucy feels alone, frustrated, lost and at the end of her rope… and scared.
She is a single mom, and she has fears that all single moms and dads have, “What am I going to do? Who is going to be there for my children? While I heal who is going to help me and my children? How are my bills going to be paid? Without an income or being able to function for any length of time…who is going to pay my bills, to keep my lights on, my water, my phone…and who is going to pay my rent so that I have a home to come home to, a place where my children can lay their heads down to sleep at night? These are worries of a healthy parent, can you imagine knowing that you need surgery that you will need time to heal and feel totally hopeless and overwhelmed? So many unanswered questions…so many fears, so many wondering why is this happening to me….so many uncontrollable tears….and asking God why me…
I wish I could do more…all you Entertainers/Performers who have performed for Lucy on stage all these years, all her friends, all her acquaintances, all those businesses that she has given her time to, and provided entertainment for… she could really use all our help now…She needs each person who is reading this to help….
It would be great if we could give her health, and peace, and a long life with her sons… and we all pray and believe that this will happen. But praying alone does not, wipe away the tears of fear she is experiencing now…
But we could ease her worries …with this fundraiser event of September 17th. Her fear of being homeless, of not being able to function after surgery that she must have or she will die and it doesn’t take care of herself and her boys while trying to heal from these surgeries that she will soon have to go through to save her life. Because of these fears and worries, the thought of Giving Up, has entered her mind…but really what good will that do…she leaves her children without a mother, without ….I don’t want to go on with this… but..
Can you imagine being a 11 and 15 year old boy and knowing that your mom has Cancer and……..well can you imagine. I can and it brings tears to my eyes…and breaks my heart….I don’t know what it does to you, but this is something that should never had happened to her and her son, it should Never happen to anyone…but it has and she is alone, at least that is how she is feeling right now, …
This time and disease is also shaping those young boys lives… turning them into the men they will become in the future… this is hurting them beyond anything that we can imagine…
I pray that everyone reading this can feel what this all means
