Evolution of a Curmudgeon

By Wendell Abern

Dear Curious,

Later this month, I will be 80 years old.

I mentioned this to a friend last week, and he said, “Have you always been as grouchy as you are today?”

Good question. Like many of the traits we all exhibit in maturity, my crankiness had its roots in my youth.  In fact, I can pinpoint it to one event.  And one person.  Connie Berman.

I was eleven years old, and had lived in Chicago for three weeks when I was invited to my first boy-girl party.

I asked Frank, the one friend I’d made, if he were going. When he assured me he was, I asked, “But why would they invite me?  I hardly know anyone.”

“They needed another guy, and everyone knows Connie has a big crush on you.  Besides, they had six girls and only five guys.  They had to make it even because we’re going to play kissing games.”

          “We’re going to do what?”

I had been born in Bismarck, North Dakota. I had grown up in little towns all over the Midwest and had no idea what a kissing game was, or how it was played,  and until that time had thought of girls as kind of — well — soft boys.  What did this mean?  And why did everybody know everything, and all I knew were multiplication tables and Greek mythology?

The party took place at the Sunday afternoon following my talk with Frank. After presents had been opened and sandwiches and cake eaten, Sidney announced, “Okay, we’re going to play Post Office now.”

          “What’s that?” I asked Frank.

“Guy says he wants to give a one-cent stamp to a girl. Names her. They go in the other room for one kiss. Then the guy comes out and announces who the girl wants and for how many stamps, and they kiss that many times. And it just goes on, boy-girl, boy-girl, like that.”

Connie, the hostess, selected Sidney to go first.

(Four years later, Connie told me how she had planned the whole game. She told Sidney to announce the game and go first and call for Janet. Then Janet would call for Bob, Bob for Connie, and Connie for me.)

The kissing took place in the parents’ bedroom.  When Bob emerged after his pre-planned one-cent kiss with Connie, he announced that Connie had specified an air-mail stamp for me.  An air mail stamp in those days cost three cents.  Three kisses!  Everyone hooted and hollered.

I walked in, shut the bedroom door, and with no hesitation Connie walked up, threw her arms around me and kissed me.

“That’s not how you kiss,” she said.

          “It’s not?”

“No.  Don’t you ever see movies?  You kiss like this.”

And with that, she flang herself at me again, wrapped her arms around my neck and plastered herself against me.  When she let go, and while my hair was still curling all by itself, she said, “That’s better.”

          “It was?”

She giggled.  “This time,” she said, “we’re going to open our mouths and touch tongues.”

          We’re going to do what?”

Instead of answering, she threw herself at me again, and during the kiss opened her mouth, forcing mine to open too.

“Did you like that?” she asked.

          “Um … um …”

          “Let’s do it again.”

“But … but … we’ve already kissed three times. Isn’t that against the rules?”

“The rules?” She laughed. “You think everyone plays according to the rules? Bob and Janet were in here for five minutes for two kisses.  You think they were playing according to the rules?”

“Yeah. They were here for a long time.”

She laughed and kissed me again.  And again.  After a few minutes, she said, “Okay, I’m going to go out and say you asked for Jennifer.  A one-cent stamp.  One kiss only!  And I mean it!  Then Jennifer’s going to ask for Ralph, Ralph will ask for me, and I’ll ask for you again.”

“But — but is that fair? I mean, what about Anita? No one has — “

“Will you stop with the ‘fair’ business already?”  Then she kissed me again and said, “Hey, you’re getting good at this.”

“Okay,” I said, “but … but look, you can’t tell anyone about … about, you know, the tongues.”

          “I won’t.  I promise.”

“No one can know about the tongues, Connie.”

“No one will know,” she said as she left.  I heard her announce that I wanted Jennifer for a one-cent stamp. She accompanied Jennifer to the bedroom and I heard her whisper, “One kiss, Jen.  One.  Mouths closed.  And that’s it.”

I kissed Jennifer once, went out to the living room and sent in Ralph for an air mail job.  Jennifer had asked for only a one-cent stamp, but by this time I had decided if everyone else could make up their own rules, so could I.  Ralph thanked me for it later.

The next morning, I walked to school, still trying to sort out yesterday’s events.  Ralph, Sidney and Bob were waiting for me. They saw me, laughed, and went into a routine they had obviously rehearsed.  Each said a line:

“Look, up in the sky …”

          “It’s a bird … it’s a plane …”

          “No, it’s Supertongue!”

“Very funny,” I said.  And I was not pleased.  The nickname stuck with me all through high school.

                                                *        *        *

Consider the valuable lessons I learned at that party :  no one can keep a secret; no one plays by the rules, and if you can gerrymander a game of Post Office, you can rig anything.

To this day, I consider that experience the birth of my crankiness. Over the following 69 years, life happened, and I just naturally evolved into the irascible curmudgeon I am today.

          Cantankerously Yours,

          Wendell Abern

Montreal:  Taste, Explore, Experience

Story by Terri Marshall, Photos by Gregory Holder

My first morning in Montreal I was greeted in the lobby of my downtown hotel – the sleek, modern, Novotel – by Ruby.  A native Montrealer and tourism professional, Ruby’s mission was to give me a taste of her city – literally and figuratively,

“There are a few key ways to tell who is a native Montrealer and who isn’t,” began Ruby.  “If you are a true Montrealer, you will never, ever be seen carrying a coffee cup on the street while rushing to your office or anywhere else.”  Apparently, Montreal residents take their coffee seriously.  They go to their neighborhood coffee shop, order their favorite brew and actually sit down to savor its taste before heading out for the day.  Wow, what a concept!

fairmount_bagel_shop1“Dance is an important part of our culture, we love to eat, we are into biking and we will give you a kiss on each cheek after meeting you,” Ruby explained.  “Oh, and you absolutely have to try our bagels.”

I took Ruby’s advice about the bagels and many other things.  The result is my list of not to be missed Montreal experiences.

Fairmount Bagels

The best introduction to a Montreal bagel is to ask for one just out of the oven. If you have to wait a few minutes, you can enjoy the scene in the kitchen as workers heap massive mounds of dough onto the counter before hand rolling each bagel for baking in the old fashioned wood-burning ovens – the same method started by Fairmount Bagels’ founder, Isadore Shlafman, in 1919 when he first introduced the bagel to Canada.

Smaller and sweeter than its New York cousin, hot from the oven these bagels quite literally melt in your mouth.  The secret is the water – Montreal’s is soft and mineral free.  And, the bagels are boiled in honey water just before they are baked leaving a sweeter less chewy bagel.  www.fairmountbagel.com

Poutines at La Banquise

Poutines are a tradition in Montreal and at La Banquise you can orderpoutines a plate of poutines 24 hours a day making this Mont-Royal neighborhood restaurant, a must-taste experience.  A delicious, if not artery-restricting, Quebec specialty, poutines are a mixture of fries topped with brown sauce and cheese curds.  At La Banquise the basic poutines are jazzed up with all manner of other toppings.  “La Elvis” adds ground beef, green peppers and mushrooms.  “La Pizza” heaps strips of pepperoni, peppers and mushrooms atop the fries. Bring your appetite!  www.restolabanquise.com

Marche Jean-Talon

Montreal’s outdoor markets are truly the best location to taste thenotredamebasilica city.  The largest and most spectacular is Marche Jean-Talon in Montreal’s Little Italy neighborhood.  This open air market features a staggering number of stands filled with locally grown fruits and vegetables, locally produced cheeses, gourmet seasonings, freshly baked pies and confections….the list goes on and on.

The colorful scene is entertaining, aromatically-pleasing and delicious.  It’s the perfect spot to fill up a picnic basket before heading up to Parc Mont Royal and finding a spot to savor your treats while overlooking the Montreal skyline.  www.marchespublics-mtl.com/English/Jean-Talon

Parc Mont Royal

montroyalview2Designed by Frederck Law Olmsted, the architect for New York’s Central Park, Mont Royal Park is a forest within the city.  As the city’s highest point, it affords spectacular views of the Montreal skyline making the chalet at the top  a popular spot for photos.

The park can be reached by bus, or – if you want to work off some of those poutines – you can hike to the top via trails and wooden steps.  The Smith House is the gateway to the park and provides information on park activities, its history and nature and conservation issues.

Mont Royal is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature within the city while exploring the trails and pausing to enjoy the spectacular views.

Old Montreal

Stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal to get a feel for the way things were in years gone by.  Don’t just walk through – walk in – go into the historic buildings, check out the inside furnishings, artwork and architecture.  Ask questions, look around – proprietors are more than happy to share stories about the historic buildings.

No visit to Old Montreal would be complete without a tour of Notre Dame Basilica.  Built in 1656, Montreal’s oldest Catholic Church is a true historical gem known for its intricately designed interior with stained glass windows depicting the history of the city.  www.basiliquenddm.org/en/

Neighborhoods

Exploring the ethnically diverse neighborhoods of Montreal is one of the best ways to truly experience this international city.  Each has its own coffee shop, markets, chocolate shops, locally-owned boutiques and ethnically-diverse restaurants.

From downtown with its bustling business centers, underground city and urban nightlife, to the sights and sounds of Chinatown, to the artistic Plateau Mont-Royal, there is something for everyone’s taste.

Pick up the city bus route#55 in Old Montreal and travel through the heart of each neighborhood.  Hop off to explore the shops, restaurants and unique architecture of each quarter.  It’s the perfect inexpensive “hop on hop off” tour of the city.

Whatever the season, whatever your tastes, Montreal is an exciting destination!  For more ideas, visit www.tourism-montreal.org.

Black Sparrow Pirate Adventures – A Delightful Cruise

By Krista Martinelli

Do you ever feel like it would be more fun to go through life as a pirate?  Well, if you’ve been on a pirate cruise with Black Sparrow

Captain Joker, the pirate who runs the ship
Captain Joker, the pirate who runs the ship
Pirate Adventures, you will know that it’s true. Being a pirate is awesome!  Being part of a crew on a mission to find lost treasure, battling with water cannons and learning the ropes as a pirate is something your kids will be talking about for many years to come.

This 65-minute cruise sets sail from Riviera Beach Marina Saturdays and Sundays, as well as some week days, and is masterfully executed by the captain and crew. The lead pirate Captain Joker is exceptional at what he does, probably the best pirate in Florida. Besides dressing the part perfectly, he’s believable, extremely funny and has a gentle way of handling groups of rowdy children, channeling their energy the right way.  See the video in this month’s “Letter from the Editor” too.

For a typical cruise, you show up about 30 minutes before departure, allowing time for the kids get face painting or pirate tattoos, as well as outfitted with pirate vests and sashes.  Everyone is invited to wear their own pirate attire, if they have pirate things in their wardrobe. Pirate items are also on sale, including swords, muskets and eye patches.

What makes the Black Sparrow Pirate cruises so popular?  According to owner Chris Gallagher, it’s the interactive aspect. “The

Captain and owner of Black Sparrow Pirate Adventures Chris Gallagher

kids are part of the crew. They understand that they are the key to finding the treasure. They raise the flag, learn the Black Sparrow Pirate oath, keep a look out for bad pirates out at sea and are always engaged in what’s going on.”

When my family went on the pirate cruise, I noticed how much fun the kids were having – yelling, laughing and carrying on in their pirate ways, and then I noticed that the adults were having a ball too.  They cleverly add in some funny material that’s aimed right at the parents, and the parents appreciate this too.  Also, it’s a wonderful opportunity for action-packed picture-taking against a beautiful backdrop, as they sail around Peanut Island.

Here’s what one parent (Amy) had to say, after the cruise, “My 8-year-old son had an amazing time! The crew was extremely kid-friendly, and every second of the trip was action packed and very well-orchestrated. The adults also had a great time watching the expressions of happiness on the children’s faces and taking lots of pictures. I highly recommend this adventure for children and adults of all ages!”

And here’s another big thumbs up from another parent (Kim), after a birthday party on the cruise, “This was honestly the BEST party we could’ve had for my daughter Reese’s 4th birthday! She had the TIME of HER LIFE! She looked at me halfway through the sail and told me, ‘Mommy, this is the best party EVER!’  So take this as a clear testament to their attitudes, abilities, and to the overall show put on. It’s AWESOME! Anyone looking into using Black Sparrow totally should!” See the Black Sparrow Pirates Reviews page for further reviews.

For birthday parties, Black Sparrow Pirate Adventures offer a memorable, one-of-a-kind experience.  You can share the boat with others or charter a boat, which holds up to 45 kids and adults. The birthday child gets a “first mate certificate,” a goody bag full of pirate loot, and a rowdy singing of “Happy Birthday,” of course, from the whole crew.  Camps or groups are also welcome. “We’re very open for whatever anyone wants to do – within reason,” says owner Chris Gallagher.

Shooting the water cannons
Shooting the water cannons

They’ve recently added an adult sunset cruise to their offerings. You’re encouraged to bring your own beverages and appetizers, kick back and enjoy the Intracoastal Waterway during sunset.

The Black Sparrow colorful crew includes three captains – Chris, Bobby and Ryan and a band of pirates with Captain Joker running the show. The kids seem to be in awe of Captain Joker and the other pirates. They are ready to take orders, as soon as they learn that they need to serve as the crew mates on deck.  The kids also enjoy the other pirates including Mermaid McKenzie, Jonathon (AKA Skinny John), Dairo (AKA Sharkbite), and even, eventually, the menacing Pirate Jack.

Captain Joker has had a love for acting since the age of eight and also serves as a musician in local bands, playing the sitar.  “Halloween’s my favorite holiday,” he adds, “because you get to be someone else!”

While Black Sparrow Pirates are still relatively new to the waterways, after opening for business last summer, their fame is growing in Florida. They took 2nd place in the Palm Beach Christmas parade this year. “Word of mouth has really helped us,” explains Gallagher, saying that happy parents and kids definitely tell their friends about Black Sparrow Pirates, right after they go on the cruise.

“It’s about bringing something special into our community for the kids,” says Gallagher. “Everyone enjoys the cruise, and it will grow a little each year. Also, the approximately one-hour cruise is the perfect length for young kids, just enough. We have a lot of repeat kids, who come back to us. It’s a high-caliber experience!”

For Captain Joker, the main pirate, it’s “the greatest thing in the world to see the kids so happy!”

It’s recommended to make your reservations approximately a week or more in advance, although they continue to take reservations until the ship is full.  With birthday parties, at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance is recommended.  And with a chartered ship, it just depends upon availability, but Captain Chris Gallagher encourages people to “just ask” and see if it’s a time and day that will work.  He adds that many of their customers aboard the ship have enjoyed going to the Tiki Waterfront Sea Grill (561-845-5532), right on deck a few feet away from the ship, before or after the cruise.

If your kids are ready to take the pirate oath, shoot water cannons, follow maps, fight other pirates and find treasure, you can make reservations today!  It will be an experience that your whole family will treasure!!

March, 2013 – Golden Zucchini Coins

Yummy TreatsGolden Zucchini Coins from Stella's kitchen

From Stella’s Kitchen

Objective: To share quick recipes kids can make on their own with little to no adult supervision.

Requirements: A positive attitude, a desire to learn, and a HEALTHY appetite!

March, 2013  – Golden Zucchini Coins

There are just two steps to cooking this side dish.  If you like dipping things in marinara sauce (as I do), you’ll love these!

Ingredients:

6 small, thin zucchinis or yellow summer squashes (or a comination)

½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese

Salt – to taste

Pepper – optional

Spaghetti sauce – optional

Use a plastic knife and slice each zucchini into ¼” thick rounds. In a wide microwavable bowl, heat the zucchini slices, with ¼ cup of water, for 1-2 minutes (until just tender).  Drain in a colander and set aside.

Preheat the broiler. Place the zucchini in a single layer on a large baking sheet. You can line the baking sheet with aluminum foil if you want it to be easier to clean up afterwards. Sprinkle each “coin” with a pinch of salt (and pepper, optional) and some Parmesan cheese. Broil the zucchini until just golden, 1 to 2 minutes. Watch your “coins” as they broil, just to be sure they don’t burn.  Have a grown-up take the baking sheet out of the oven.  And you are now rich – with zucchini coins!

If you’d like to dip them, pour spaghetti sauce into a small dipping bowl.  Enjoy!

March, 2013 – Wellington’s Food Truck Revolution

Wellington’s Food Truck Revolution

Wellington Amphitheater Park

12150 Forest Hill Boulevard, Wellington

www.foodtruckinvasion.com/wellington

The food trucks have invaded Wellington! On Thursday nights you can dsc_0543find a gourmet gathering of these roving meals on wheels parked next to the Wellington Amphitheater. Anything from Korean BBQ to trendy gourmet cupcakes can be found within a short stroll of each other. The food truck revolution has taken this country by storm over the past several years. These fully-equipped traveling kitchens bring the hottest new trends in food, at affordable prices, right to the curb. This is Foodie nirvana—a chance to sample an exciting array of dishes without the shocking sticker prices and fuss of the high-end restaurants.

We showed up early for the revolution. Most trucks are ready to serve by five o’clock and stay open till 9:30pm. I know it’s a Thursday, but try to get there early or you will struggle for parking and they run out of items quickly.  A musician, playing a guitar on the lawn, added a nice tone to the evening of feasting on asphalt. I noticed several fabulous picnic spots pop up on the grass—grand affairs with candles, wine glasses, and checkered table cloths. It was a beautiful scene to see people out under the stars enjoying the food. Children ran in the twilight on the grand amphitheater lawn as we sat on spread out quilts and savored our foodie finds. Bring some chairs or a blanket; there are only a few tables present.

The “Crazydilla” truck is a popular place for fantastic quesadillas. I was disappointed that the “Reubadilla” ($11.32) was already sold out when I arrived at the truck. A few of the lucky patrons standing about and stuffing their faces with this sought after menu item expressed to me that the “Reubadilla” was fantastic. I will have to go back on another Thursday. The “Mexidilla” ($9.48) proved to be cheesy with nice chunks of grilled chicken and very satisfying.

We moved on to a delicious flame grilled burger ($8.00) at “Gastro Truck” and it was honestly, one of the best burgers I’ve had. The fresh cut gourmet fries ($6.00) from the “Top Fries” truck went well with the burger. At Top Fries, you can live your “fry fantasy” with interesting and exotic toppings on their crisp and yummy fries.

Our most interesting pick of the night came from the “Dim Ssam”dsc_0548 truck. The Chunk’d Spicy Cheesy Kalabi Beef Tater Tots ($8.00) were divine. You will never look at a tater tot the same after trying this addictive dish. I would go back any Thursday night just to have this meal.

For dessert, we joined the long line at the “Hip Pop” truck for one of their soon-to-be famous gelato pops. The display alone will make you want one. Pops in beautiful rainbows of colors lined up in neat and tidy rows wait for you to pick your favorite. You can have them dipped in chocolate or drizzled and then rolled in a variety of toppings, or make a pop into a shake. Any way you look at it, this is a fun place to have a sweet. The flavors are vibrantly fresh and delicious. We tried the mixed berry, vanilla bean, Belgian chocolate, banana, and lemon. All were spectacular.

Thursday nights are something to look forward to now that Wellington has been invaded by the food truck revolution. The line-up of food trucks participating changes weekly, so there is promise of new things to try each week. Check their Facebook page for up-to-date lists for the current week. Bring some lawn chairs and a good bottle of wine… maybe some candles and make an evening out of it. Sit back and savor this tasty invasion under the stars.

Stray Thoughts: Emptying the Think Tank

By Alan Williamson

I’ve had a lot of things on my mind lately, so here goes . . .

  • IDEA: A cop show entitled “Fine and Dandy” that follows the exploits of officers John Fine and Darius Dandy as they work the streets of a South Florida city named Evergrass Groves. Episode One: John and Darius raid a pill mill posing as a chiropractic clinic posing as a consignment shop.

  • The sign said “long-haired freaky people need not apply.” Which is really weird because the day before it said “u-turn not permitted.”

  • If you’re ever with a group of people having their photo taken and you’re tempted to make that thumbs-up gesture, don’t. It always looks annoyingly stupid.

  • I recently considered pursuing a career as an organic farmer to have a more eco-friendly influence on the environment. Unfortunately, it ended abruptly when I got motion sickness during the crop rotations.

  • As I get older, I sometimes see my father when I look in the mirror. I was startled once to see my mother in the mirror, but that’s because she came up behind me suddenly to ask if we had any Tylenol.

  • Air Travel Anti-Terrorism Enhancement: Currently, before a plane takes off, flight attendants instruct all passengers in the use of emergency equipment and check to see that seatbelts are fastened and seats are in the upright positions. Let’s also have them make the following announcement: “Before we take off, we ask that all passengers please check fellow passengers in your immediate area for any screwballs, weirdos, wackos, misfits, haunted drifters or fidgety religious fanatics.”

  • Like the song says “If there’s a rock and roll heaven, you know they have a hell of a band.” Plus, progressive policies are in place on recreational drug use.

  • Best Game Show Host of All Time: Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek. He’s a sharp dresser, he keeps a fast-paced show running smoothly, and when someone misses an easy question he never says “Clutch answer, dumbass” like a friend or family member would.

  • While staying at my wife’s parent’s house I was sure I had lost my wallet (a 20 minute search came up empty). What a terrible, sickening feeling. I had resigned myself to spending hours on the phone canceling credit cards, etc., when my mother-in-law remembered grabbing some papers off a bureau and stuffing them in a drawer. It turns out my wallet was under the papers and accidentally got stuffed in the drawer with them. So, all’s well that ends well . . . except for my mother-in-law who is sitting in a Sterling Heights, Michigan jail charged with criminal mischief and unlawful concealment of an out-of-state wallet.

  • IDEA: I want to create a television series called Previously so that every week during the recap of last week’s episode the voiceover can say “Previously on Previously.”

  • FACT: Approximately two-thirds of all Americans are overweight. The other third are wondering where all the snacks went.

  • No one says “Good Grief” or “Great Caesar’s Ghost” anymore, but plenty of people still say “Holy Cow.” Pretty amazing when you consider “Good Grief” and “Great Caesar’s Ghost” had some snappy alliteration going for them and “Holy Cow” conjures up images of a slow-witted farm animal. Let’s all make the jump to “Holy Crap” and call it a day, for Pete’s Sake.

  • At what point in time did Barry Manilow become an elderly Jewish woman with a beauty salon hairdo and a nails-on-the-blackboard singing voice?

  • Elvis is alive and I’ve got the concert tickets to prove it! I bought them from some guy at the flea market. Sucky part is I have to fly to Guadalajara, Mexico to catch the comeback show.

  • The international graphical symbols for “Men” and “Women” on restroom doors are way too subtle for my attention span. Can we at least give the man a baseball cap and the woman some curves so I don’t have to stop and decipher which figure represents the room I’m pre-approved to take a wiz in after downing the 2 for 1 happy hour house wine at Chili’s?

  • Mail Management Experiment: When I get junk mail I immediately rip it up and throw it in the trash, achieving a 58% decrease in my weekly mail backlog. Using the same strategy with bills has resulted in an additional 37% decrease in weekly mail and a 100% decrease in electricity and insurance coverage.

  • CONFESSION: Sometimes I just want to rhyme. Is that such a horrible crime?

Thank you, you’ve been great! Drive safely! Good night everybody!

Wellness at Work

By Cheryl Alker

Creating a high-performing, health-focused organization is a challenge that many companies face. Research indicates that organizations that implement a corporate wellness strategy gain valuable benefits through lowered healthcare costs.

With health care costs continuing to rise at alarming rates, it is more important than ever before to keep your employees healthy. Because of the many benefits of corporate wellness programs, most companies view wellness programs as an investment in their most valuable asset, their employees.

The Statistics are Clear

  • Preventable illness makes up at least 70 percent of all illness and the associated costs.
  • The total cost of obesity to U.S. employers has been estimated at $13 billion and rising.
  • Obese Americans spend about 36 percent more on health services and 77 percent more on medications than people of healthy weight.
  • Workplace alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use costs over $100 billion each year.
  • Job stress is estimated to cost $200 to $300 billion annually in absenteeism, tardiness, and lost productivity.

The Workplace

The workplace is an ideal setting to address these health issues and promote healthier lifestyles. At the workplace, individuals can obtain health-related information, take part in health screenings and preventive services, and gain the social support often needed for positive change.

Return-On-Investment

The return-on-investment for corporate wellness programs is significant. Year-round comprehensive corporate wellness programs have shown savings-to-cost ratios of over $3 saved for each $1 invested. Corporate Wellness Programs not only uses targeted interventions to reduce health costs, but it is also a strategy to create a dynamic work environment. Health promotion programs create an organizational culture that fosters vitality, motivation, and synergy. Corporate Wellness Programs are a worthwhile long-term strategy to improving the health and well-being of your employees.

Why Obesity can Hurt Your Business

Sixty percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, 74% more than 20 years ago! Being overweight or obese makes people at great risk from health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Nearly two out of three people are overweight, and one out of three is obese. Less than 15% of Americans eat the daily recommended number of fruits and vegetables, and less than 25% get the recommended amounts of exercise. #2 Work Place Morale
If employee’s are healthy, they are in the main much happier; this equates to enhanced performance. Also because the company is taking measures to ensure their health and long term wellbeing the employee’s will be more likely to be loyal and responsible.

#3 Reduced Absenteeism
There are many small changes in lifestyle that can influence overall health and fitness. A Wellness Program identifies these, educates and implements them. Through education and training a Wellness Program can greatly reduce absenteeism. For your company this is the bottom line; reduced absenteeism equals a reduction in costs and an increase in productivity.
