I get it, I’ve been there.

The Arc Wins National Award for Student Mentor Program

The Arc Wins National Award for Student Mentor Program

Riviera Beach, Fla. – The Arc of Palm Beach County is being nationally recognized for its Stand Up program. Out of a pool of 600 local chapters, Palm Beach County received the Program Innovation Award at The Arc’s 2019 National Convention in Washington, D.C. On Saturday, December 14, students that are involved in the mentor program got their first look at the trophy.

The national award honors an executive director whose chapter has designed and implemented a program to meet the needs of people with developmental disabilities. The Arc adopted the Stand Up program in 2018. The mentor program matches high school students with same-age peers at The Arc. Bairbre Flood, the Senior Director of Family Services, presented the award to Kimberly McCarten, The Arc’s president and CEO.

“We have found that although our Stand Up mentors and mentees have different life challenges, and even communicate in different ways, their common interests bridge the gaps. They find ways to connect and communicate,” said McCarten. “We believe Stand Up can model how to create an inclusive and accepting community.”

The Arc’s National Convention, which took place in October, is an annual gathering of families, advocates, and professionals in the disability community. Members of The Arc’s National Conference of Executives (NCE) recognize local chapters for their outstanding efforts to fulfill the mission, core values, and position statements of The Arc.

About The Arc of Palm Beach County
The Arc is changing the conversation around disabilities by defying definitions, inspiring possibilities, and improving the lives of the people we serve. Since 1958, The Arc has envisioned a community where every person feels welcome, connected, and accepted.

Diego’s Superhero 5K 4 Life

Diego’s Superhero 5K 4 Life

Honoring 16-Year-Old Drowning Victim Diego Degrossi & Benefiting Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency

At John Prince Park in Lake Worth Beach

Saturday, February 1 at 8 am

Superhero Costumes are Optional for ‘Mission of Love’ Event

(Lake Worth Beach, FL – January 9, 2020) Bonnie Beer, a partner at Caffe Luna Rosa in Delray Beach, today invited runners of all ages to participate in Diego’s Superhero 5K 4 Life at John Prince Park in Lake Worth Beach on Saturday, February 1, starting at 8 am.

The event is in honor of Diego Degrossi, who was 16 years old and a student at Park Vista High School, before tragically drowning in a local lake last summer. Funds raised at the 5K will be donated to the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency, which saves lives through organ donation and transplantation, as well as providing organs and tissues for research to advance medical science.

Diego Degrossi

“Diego was a wonderful young man. He played soccer and basketball his entire life, and was best friend to my son Ryan since they were both 3,” says Beer, who is organizing the 5K along with the BadAss Running Company and Diego’s parents, Martin and Ana Degrossi.

When Diego lost his five-day battle for life at St. Mary’s Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, his parents decided to “make a positive from this devastating nightmare” by donating his organs, eyes and tissue to families in need.

“At least three people received life-saving organs, including his passionate heart and both kidneys,” according to his parents. Diego’s “beautiful blue eyes as well as tissue helped many others. The decision to gift his organs made Diego a superhero. And, for us, our mission became inspiring others on the importance of becoming an organ donor… save a life, save a family!”

“This isn’t your standard 5K, it’s a 5K built on love, and it is the legacy of our hero Diego and his parents,” adds Beer. “Diego was a superhero and so are Martin and Ana, which is why we are encouraging race participants to come in costume. This is optional, of course, but our favorite costumes will be getting significant prizes.”

Participants will journey through John Prince Park’s beautiful 5K course overlooking the water and natural preserves of one of Palm Breach County’s nicest parks. Race Day pickup starts at 6:45 am.

The cost to participate in Diego’s Superhero 5K 4 Life is $39.95 (although the price will increase after January 27). Runners will receive a beautiful, 4-inch custom medal symbolic of Diego’s heroism, with spinning heart, glitter blue eyes, and a ribbon necklace.

Additional race event perks include:

+ Certified 5K Course Complete with Mat Chip Timing, Results Monitors and Start/Finish Arch

+ Route Water Stations

+ Full Color Custom Race Bib

+ Spectacular Next Level Racerback Tank or Unisex T-Shirt (Optional: only $6.95)

FREE Public Art Exhibit “The Art of Florida’s Highwaymen”
at the Wellington Community Center, January 17-19th

By Harold Newton

The Village of Wellington is excited to announce a FREE public art exhibit “The Art of Florida’s Highwaymen” coming to the Wellington Community Center (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard). The exhibit will be on display for public viewing Friday through Sunday, January 17-19, 2020, with presentations each day at 2:00 PM. A key member of the Highwaymen, R. A. McLendon, who began his painting career in 1955, will be painting live on site. A free opening reception is scheduled for Friday, January 17 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Who are the Highwaymen? In the late 1950s, during the Jim Crow era of the south, a small group of African American artists from the Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach area started a business venture during a time where employment opportunities available were most likely low paying, minimum wage jobs.

Eventually, the group numbered twenty-six self-taught artists. Unable to display and sell their work through traditional channels such as galleries and art agents, they traveled the roads selling their paintings to business owners, real estate brokers, lawyer’s offices, banks, and others along the way. This unconventional sales method earned them the name of “The Highwaymen” sometime in the mid-1990s. For over 60 years the group captured Florida’s natural beauty in an estimated 200,000 paintings, depicting striking views of backwoods scenes, breaking waves, palm-lined beaches, and rivers, to name a few.

The Highwaymen have been featured in the N.Y. Times, on National Public Radio, and were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Their work is on display in the White House and Florida Governor’s mansion, in addition to countless homes and offices across the country.

Hours for viewing the exhibit are as follows:

Friday, January 17th 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Opening Reception from 4:00 PM
