Wellington Plants Seeds for Greener Tomorrow

Wellington celebrated National Public Lands Day (NPLD) with approximately 50 volunteers planting more than 300 Walter’s viburnum shrubs at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Environmental Preserve.

On Saturday, September 24th, more than 175,000 volunteers nationwide visited their favorite parks, beaches, wildlife preserves or forests and chipped in to help improve these treasured places. Wellington residents did their part in the 23rd Annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United States. This year’s Wellington group included volunteers from the Wellington Garden Club, Girl Scout Troop 22222, Boy Scout Troop 222, Cub Scout Troop 222 and the Palm Beach Central High School Environmental Club. Native seedlings planted will enhance the natural habitat for birds and pollinators. This is the third year that the Village of Wellington has partnered with community groups to celebrate National Public Lands Day by planting native trees and shrubs at the preserve. Special thanks to the volunteers for their efforts to create a greener tomorrow.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Halloween is a favorite time of year for many children and to ensure they’re safe, the South Florida Fair will continue its annual tradition of presenting Spookyville. The event is slated for two weekends, Oct. 21-23, and Oct. 28-31, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Halloween, Mon., Oct. 31, in Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds, 9067 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach.

The cost is $10 per person, which includes rides and games, and kids 2 and younger are free. Tickets may be purchased online at www.southfloridafair.com or at the gate. Parking also is free.

“Spookyville is an old-fashioned Halloween event that’s fun for the entire family,” said Lorie Stinson, the fair’s exhibits and special events manager. “Intended for kids 12 and younger, there will be trick or treating each day along with other activities for the kids.”

Spookyville’s highlights include trick-or-treating, carnival rides, a costume parade each day, bounce houses, a barrel train and a big wall on which kids can color. There also will be old-fashioned games, arts and crafts, a spooky house, food and drinks and vendors.

Those who wear a costume on both Sundays can compete for prizes starting at 1 p.m. A pet costume contest will be held on Sat., Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded. Pets must be on a leash when entering the event. The Fair asks that no exotic pets or reptiles (snakes, spiders, etc.) be brought on site as they may scare the younger kids.

Backpacks, food, glass containers and alcohol are prohibited. Participating Sponsors are Ford, Kubota, Florida Dairy Farmers, Coca Cola, Lion Country Safari and Solid Waste Authority.

Fright Nights adds horror-themed escape rooms

West Palm Beach, Fla. — Fright Nights, the largest haunted attraction in South Florida, has something new to offer when it kicks off on Oct. 7 this year: two horror-themed escape rooms. “Escape Fright Nights” will have live actors that interact with, and even scare, players as they try to solve puzzles and escape the rooms. As a bonus, participants will be given access to the midway, so they can enjoy rides, food and entertainment after they escape the room. Video game designer and horror enthusiast, Glennis McClellan, is heading up the project.

“Because I have an interest in both practical and digital effects, this is a natural transition for me,” said McClellan. “Escape room design combines core video game mechanics with real-life application. They are the literal physical embodiment of video games, which is what makes them so darn fun to design.”

McClellan also has access to Hollywood-caliber props and professional actors at Fright Nights, so the production value will be high.

“We will be able to offer a blockbuster-quality experience that you won’t be able to get anywhere else in South Florida,” added McClellan.

Alex Rodriguez, operations head of Fright Nights, is excited about this addition to his lineup.

“As with our four haunted houses, we will offer a truly unique and immersive experience for ‘Escape Fright Nights,’” said Rodriguez. “Right now, it is slated to run only for the duration of Fright Nights, so participants are encouraged to book online right away as space will be limited.”

There are two Escape Room scenarios to choose from – each one is an hour long. Outbreak is a lab has released a deadly virus and is overrun by zombies – participants will have one hour to find the cure. Those brave enough should beware, as this escape room features the undead lurking around every corner. McClellan claims this is the scariest of the two rooms and not for the faint of heart.

The second Escape Room is Freakshow. The Smith’s Traveling Circus is back in town, and now someone is dead. Guests are advised to find the murderer before he finds them. This room will feature a sinister clown who may help or hinder participants – depending on the game play.

Reservations are recommended for the Escape Rooms for a one-hour experience, which costs $25 per themed room, and includes admission to Fright Nights and unlimited Midway rides. The haunts are an additional $5 per house. Various cost-saving promotions will be offered on the website. To make reservations, go to http://tickets.escapefrightnights.com.

Fright Nights is slated for multiple nights: October 6-8, 13-15, 20-22, and 27-29 from 6 p.m.-11 p.m. on Thursday and 6 p.m. until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. The haunted houses open at 7 p.m. Children under 12 require parental supervision.

In addition to the Escape Rooms, Fright Nights will feature four new haunted houses this year: Sunnyville School House, where the children come out, but not to play; Pestilence: an age of plagues and vampires; The Doll Factory, where evil lurks behind their glassy eyes; and The Void, a terrifying trip into darkness. In addition, guests can enjoy rides on the family-friendly “Monster Midway” – complete with live entertainment featuring magic and sideshows, local and regional bands and food and beverages.

Online advance discount tickets are on sale now through Oct. 6 at www.myfrightnights.com. A $20 general admission ticket includes entrance admission and includes three haunted houses and unlimited Midway rides. A $25 ”Terror Ticket” includes four haunted houses and unlimited Midway rides. Prices will increase at the gate by $5. Parental discretion for the haunted houses and escape rooms is advised for those younger than 12 years old.

It all started a few years ago with a desire to do some organic gardening. An article about chickens in your garden, 15 chickens and a turkey later and I have no regrets! Raising backyard chickens has been possibly the most rewarding human-animal relationship I’ve had. Are you still on the fence? Let’s see if I can help you hop to a decision.

The benefits of having pet chickens seem never ending. Chickens are surprisingly low maintenance. They need a balanced diet, housing/protection, and a constant supply of fresh water. What you put into your flock, they will give back ten-fold! By using the ‘deep litter’ method in the coop, the chickens do all the work, turning old coop bedding into compost for plants. Chickens eat pests minimizing pesticide use. My chickens will dig to China to find grubs in the soil (they’re humongous, by the way!). They may even eat small snakes and lizards. Chickens eat kitchen scraps. I have no garbage disposal and am slightly surprised to say…I don’t miss it. My chickens even get my leftovers from dining out, not without weird looks from the server. Chickens lay eggs…hello! If you choose to eat your chickens, you know they lived well and organically. Better diet and environmental enrichment will lead to a better egg or a beautiful dinner hen. Chickens are also great entertainment! I love to watch my chickens chase or catch bugs in mid-air, play for yummy treat rewards and practice sparring each other. A few of my chickens are very docile and enjoy the attention!

So, now you might be wondering “what do I need to get started?”  Preparation is key. Before you start looking at fluffy chicks, housing needs to get set up. When looking at coops or planning to build your own, an ideal environment should include the following minimally:

  • 3-4 square feet per chicken (although they do love more wing space)
  • 1 nesting box for every 3 chickens (but my chicks all fight over the same one)
  • Roosting bars (they sleep up high so install bars higher than nests to avoid sleeping in the nest)
  • Ventilation (important for both hot and cold months)
  • Easy access for cleaning and egg collecting (my coop has 2 doors; one my size and one bird size)

Depending on the efficiency of the hens’ housing, cleaning may be done once every couple of weeks with a deep cleaning once annually. Next thing to consider is what kind of diet your new babies need. From the day a chick is hatched to 18 weeks old, Purina recommends feeding starter feed (I prefer the medicated to not). After 18 weeks old, there are more options, such as layer feed (formulated for egg production) or flock raiser (for mixed flocks like mine…the turkey’s a trouble maker). Your local feed supply store can provide more information on flock specifics or at least point you in the right direction (Red Barn is my one stop hen shop). They may also be able to assist in pickin’ your chicken! You will quickly find that most chicken keepers are more than willing to lend a hand. OR, try a chicken pickin’ app that, after a series of questions, gives a variety of chicken breeds perfect for you and your family (MyPetChicken.com).

However you get your flock, be sure you make an educated decision, check your local ordinances and be polite to your neighbors. Until then, keep on cluckin’!

WHAT:          

The second free workshop of the community-wide environmental art project which focuses on the process of achieving environmental and personal balance while mastering the challenges of mobile-making

Kinetic Intentions, a community-wide environmental art project led by artist Elayna Toby Singer, features mobile-making using recycled seed pods from Florida’s threatened Mahogany trees. More than 60 people attended the first interactive workshop which focuses on the process of achieving environmental and personal balance while mastering the challenges of mobile-making. Inspired by the Tibetan Prayer Flag tradition, participants also write their own personal and environmental intentions onto ribbons. Conceived, designed and facilitated by Singer, each mobile and intention ribbon will become part of the largest temporary, kinetic tree installation in Palm Beach County, creating an outdoor curtained “room” of moving art during the Boynton Beach 2017 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium taking place February 3 – 5.

She says her recent promotion to director of brand management is a dream come true.

As I write this, we have hurricane shutters up and are anxiously awaiting Hurricane Matthew. We know there will be a lot of rain.  We know there will be a storm surge. The hurricane might hit Florida as a level 4 storm. This is serious. I hope that you are prepared and stay safe throughout the storm.

Wellington Debate was smaller than usual in numbers, but mighty in terms of the success they had at the first Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League tournament of its 2016-17 championship season. The PBCFL Congressional at Palm Beach Gardens HS on Saturday, September 24, saw excellent performances in both varsity and novice chambers:

In addition, Wellington earned a team record ELEVEN CHAMBERS CHOICE PRESIDING OFFICERS: Julie Cesta (twice), Nancy Foti (twice), James Haripal, Zachary Jacobson (twice), Dallas Nickels, Christopher Slaughter (twice), and Rafaela St. Juste each took home gavels from the tournament.

Six Wellington debaters earned new or additional National Speech & Debate Association degrees. Jacobson surpassed 500 points, earning his Degree of Special Distinction; Haripal earned his Degree of Honor, hitting the 75-point mark; and four first-year debaters earned the Degree of Merit (25+ points): Bernstein, Ndreca, Sabol, and Williams.

Description: LMC’s popular stargazing program has returned for its second season! In partnership with the Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches, LMC will host its Astronomy Nights program each month based on celestial events. The first program will be held on Friday, October 7 from 7-9:30 p.m. The night will begin with a seminar led by the Astronomical Society of the Palm Beaches, entitled Planetpalooza. You will be able to view several planets on this very popular stargazing night, including Venus, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Join us as we discuss the different physical attributes of each planet and why you can view them on this particular day. Then, join us in Loggerhead Park to peer through powerful telescopes and binoculars to get a closer look! In case of inclement weather, the presentation will be extended to include additional information on a related astronomical topic. Cost is $10/adults, $5/children and can be paid upon entrance. Description: Our annual “spook-tacular” Halloween event is on October 22, 2016 and is sure to be a blast for the entire family! From 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., bring your ghouls and goblins for a visit with our sea turtle patients and receive a free turtle-y awesome reusable trick-or-treat bag to use on the big day! Then, peek into the Haunted Hospital, experiment with our mad scientists in the Mad Science Lab and swim around our center through this year’s new Strange Seas Exhibit. From estuaries to the open ocean, children will be led through corals reefs, Jelly Junction and the Abyssopelagic Zone to explore the weird and wonderful mysteries of the deep. Two costume contests will be held at noon and 2:30 p.m. that will award the best-dressed with turtley-awesome LMC giveaways.
